Ohio river flooding, minor flood expected......

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILMINGTON, OH
1221 PM EST FRI NOV 21 2003

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A RIVER FLOOD WARNING FOR THE OHIO RIVER
AT MAYSVILLE.

FOR THE OHIO RIVER AT MAYSVILLE, THE LATEST STAGE WAS 45.1 FEET AT 10 AM FRIDAY.
MINOR FLOODING IS FORECAST, WITH THE RIVER EXPECTED TO CREST BETWEEN 50 AND 51
FEET SUNDAY NIGHT. THE FLOOD STAGE OF 50 FEET WILL BE EXCEEDED SATURDAY EVENING.
AT STAGES NEAR 51.0 FEET, WATER ENTERS HUNTINGTON PARK POWER PLANT AND BACKWATER
AND LOW LAND FLOODING BEGINS ALONG CREEKS NEAR MAYSVILLE.

As well, a river flood warning is posted for Portsmouth, Ohio......

FOR THE OHIO RIVER AT PORTSMOUTH, THE LATEST STAGE WAS 49.6 FEET AT 11 AM
FRIDAY. MINOR FLOODING IS FORECAST, WITH THE RIVER EXPECTED TO CREST BETWEEN 51
AND 52 FEET ON SUNDAY MORNING. THE FLOOD STAGE OF 50 FEET WILL BE EXCEEDED EARLY
THIS AFTERNOON. AT STAGES NEAR 51.0 FEET, LOW LYING FLOODING OCCURS ALONG THE
SOUTHERN BORDER OF SCIOTO COUNTY...AS WELL AS IN SOUTH PORTSMOUTH.

Stay tuned as more warnings come in, I do expect some flooding around Cincinnati, probably by Monday or Tuesday..........

The Ohio river at Cincinnati is expected to crest just below the 52' flood stage sometime Monday morning...at Maysville, KY it will reach between 50 and 51 feet, Portsmouth 51-52', and at Meldahl Dam 49-50', all Sunday......finally at Markland Dam, the river should crest between 44.5' and 45' on Monday afternoon.......I do expect a warning to be issued for Meldahl Dam and/or Cincinnati either today or tonight...

You're absolutely correct Josh...however, I don't believe the worst flooding hits there until about 62', which we won't get to...certainly we will see nothing like the 1997 flood, which crested in Cincinnati at 64.7' on March 5......

Hey, you posted about the flooding that was expected last week. I live in WV and we were flooded twice in one week. Many areas of the state were still recovering from the floods in March and June, and here comes another one!!!
The county where I work-Lincoln was one of the hardest hit in the last week. The first week we were flooded on a Wednesday evening/Thursday morning, this past week it hit on Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning. Many people lost their homes and businesses....Charleston also got hit pretty hard!!!!!!

Thanks for the report Lisa, and welcome to S2K...I didn't get flooding, downstream in S IN, there was minor flooding, but not bad...how bad was it??

Many areas of the state were hit bad....including some of the mountain areas. There is one school here in Lincoln county that had over $1M in damage and will not be able to reopen. Many roads were flooded and some were washed away. The flooding went all the way to the North-up in the Morgantown area, and I believe hit some parts of Ohio. We were near Cincinnati this weekend and the Ohio river was pretty high.
I don't know about this weather pattern...but, I'd rather see some snow come our way!!!!

what about louisville. was it hit hard have several friends who have homes on the ohio river. thanks inadvance.

As far as I can find, no flooding was observed at Louisville...there has been flooding at Tell City and Cannelton, IN in the last 4 days.
