Re: Tallahassee, FL Local Thread - Helene
I'm going to broaden it a bit to the impact area, a place to discuss local EM messages, closures, and also impact discussions.

Mandatory evacuation of all manufactured and mobile homes in Leon County.
Shelters in Leon County open at 6pm 9/25:
FSU closed through Sunday at 11pm
FAMU & TSC closed through Friday
I'm guessing the FSU Super Ensemble helps FSU make that decision to close through Sunday night for cleanup.

Chiles High School

Lincoln High School

Be prepared for a lengthy (weeks) time without power.

Salute!
Good to see some "boots on the ground".
For many storms the media and armchair experts make things sound like armegeddon and show videos of roofs tearing off or waves crashing into homes right on the water. It is true that many, many folks have such damage and then the not so dramatic rise of the water due to surge that has little, if any, wave action. Many places in Pass Cristian, MS had over 20 feet during Katrina and no waves because they were over a half mile from the shoreline in a pine forest, kind like the New Orleans levee failures - hundred thousand homes with 4 to 8 feet of water and zero wind damge or from waves.
So it is incumbent upon the residents to 1) look up past storms and compare damage to other locations WRT shape of shoreline, elevation above sea level and home construction considerations, 2) look up or talk with locals that have been thru storms in your location, 3) PREPARE! You may not be able to get outta Dodge, and even if the storm was weak your power could be out for a long time and you are basically camping out with a nice roof, but no toilet, microwave, shower/bath, electric oven/range, etc. Gas generator? unless you have a hundred gallon tank in the back yard, figure a day or two just for reefers and water heater and lights - no air conditioning unless you have a huge system and/or runs on natural gas ( which usually remains).
Good luck to all in the Big Bend sends a friend in "Baja Alabama" at 30.5 86.5....

I live on a major road right by I-10, so I’m staying and hoping that I will be able to travel west if conditions are bad post-storm. They’ll have to clear I-10 and the major roads first for linemen.
Definitely nervous.

Re: ATL: HELENE - Local reports, evacuation help/news, webcams
I left it the main Helene thread but posting here for locals as well. Having went through Ida and been out of power for a month and no running water for little over a week…
Cat litter. Fill your bath tub full with water. Use this FIRST for drinking only and before you dip into your water bottles / jugs.
Bucket, trash bag, scoop of litter, do your business, another scoop on top, twist and throw. Rinse and repeat. You could be out of water for an extended period of time and drinking water should prioritize flushing toilets.

Heavy rain all evening here in Tallahassee. Not much in the way of gusts. Interested to see what Helene is by noon tomorrow.

Not a bad plan unless you are due north of where Helene makes landfall. Another plan might be to head west for 2-3 hours. Then, you simply be able to return following the storm a few days later.
