Tampa got lucky missing a direct hit from Ian last year and now missed a direct hit from Idalia this year lol. Insanely good luck

Pressure has dropped a lot, but the winds haven't responded completely yet. However, I would suspect they will catch up soon. Especially if it keeps deepening into the 930s or lower. Same happened with Ida.

It looks to me like radar velocities, especially over the eastern and southern quadrants have come up about 15mph in the last 45 min or so. I think the catch-up may be starting, but I guess we’ll see what recon finds

I remember with Ian going to bed when it just became a Cat 3. Woke up to it nearly a Cat 5 (actually did briefly). Hope that doesn't repeat overnight...

It would be a disaster of epic proportion.

wow, look at that strong el nino gulf hurricane!!! I suspect that we'll probably see strengthening of it over the next few hours with pressures into the 930's.

The surge may be some of the highest recorded in Florida history as the Big Bend is extremely vulnerable. Fortunately this area is not densely populated.

I do feel a sense a relief now that the eye wall will miss Tampa Bay.

Ironically, both major hurricanes of the season so far had their genesis in the Caribbean, which many people thought would be completely shut down by El Nino. At least eastern Gulf was still on the cards of some people here

She looks to have made the turn to the NNE, she’s right on the NHC track.

My old chasing buddy Jim Leonard often said about the current hurricane just offshore: "They almost always do something stupid in the last few hours before landfall." Like stall, take a sharp turn for a few hours, change intensity suddenly, etc. We'll see.

A few dapples of WMG, eyewall isn't quite symmetrical with convection yet, but definitely looking more intense than just a few hours ago.
