Not sure about up there, but there was a story on our local news about foundations shifting around here, and they said that foundation watering is exempt from most municipal water restrictions. I went ahead and bought a soaker hose the other day and ran it about 12 to 18 inches from the foundation around my house. No issues so far, but don't want to take a chance. The guy with a foundation company said a soaker hose 15 minutes a day three times a week is sufficient, and you don't want to necessarily spray the foundation (I have done it) because it causes uneven moisture around house, causing swelling on one side and shrinking on another, rather than an even soaking all over with a soaker hose.

Good points^. Another thing I personally would recommend is deep watering around trees. I have one of those poles that can push 3 to 4 feet down (depending on rocks and roots) but I don't even bother with much above ground watering at this point. The trees are more important and I'm horrified by people not even bothering to do anything for their trees around the area but continue to water their grass :double:

Even saw a story last night on how the railroad tracks here are starting to warp due to the intense and consistent heat. Incredible!

Just saw that story like 30 minutes ago having my coffee. It's disgusting. We are in a feedback loop and it's going to take a lot of energy to dislodge it. I don't really see any major shift into September unless we get a really powerful hurricane that might be able to slightly nudge the high a little more to the north, however I'm very wary when it comes to gulf storms since path is extremely important for us to get the max benefits. At this point I'm looking towards the east Pacific in the last half of September and October for west coast Mexican landfalling storms to bring us some relief...(though highs or fronts can keep those south of Central Texas as well..)

Yeah, I have a large cedar elm that gets a combination of some above ground and drip lines in the yard. Has had several branches fall since 2021 (deep freeze, ice, drought, heat, squirrel damage). Had several branches that died in the canopy over a month period since June. Had to get my yard guys to take those down. Poor tree has lost about 10 feet in height. :( Also have a smaller Monterrey Oak we planted back in 2014. It bent like crazy in the 2021 freeze and this past February (between horizontal and 45 degrees). It has righted itself mostly, though still leans. Looks healthy, just a few small twigs die every now and then, but has growth also. I'll probably spread the soaker hose around the dripline of that one. Has some drip lines in the bed. But I have been watering it with an old sprinkler early in the morning once a week or so for about 45 minutes to an hour. I'll change to the soaker hose.

Already to 104 at DFW with a light wind and low humidity as of 1 pm.

Not saying “it” is in play but at least worth watching.

I'm ready to push the delete button for this summer. Euro shows temperatures around 105 or higher here in Starkville this upcoming week. This is ridiculous.

I noticed on FWD's forecast matrix that they're showing a wind shift to the N and then E on Sunday. Is that legit? If so maybe that helps to shave a degree or so from the worst of it. Still, 108 doesn't feel better than 110. Might as well go for some truly historic heat if we're going to get that close.

Currently 106.5F IMBY (North Dallas). +2.1 to same time yesterday...when I maxed out at 112.3. Ugh.

Winds may very shift Sunday, however that's when the ridge truly flexes beyond 600dm. Where it's hot even to the north and east, doesn't help.

I am so over this summer.

Austin Camp Mabry will have to average 90.50° for August 18–31 to exactly tie 2011 for the hottest summer on record. That's no certainty.

The West Texas Mesonet is showing around ten current temperatures of 109–110.

Some tree species like live oak do not have deep roots and, therefore, benefit from near surface watering.

Nah, I'd say it's a certainty.

Per KUT news article published on August 16:

As of Aug. 15, the average temperature at Austin’s Camp Mabry weather station during June, July and August was 89.8 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s about a third of a degree hotter than the average summer temperature was in 2011, Austin’s previous hottest summer on record.

With just two weeks left, meteorologists say it is likely this summer will surpass 2011 as Austin’s hottest ever.

“It has overtaken the number one spot,” said Brandon Gale, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service based in New Braunfels. “Unless we get some major cold front for the rest of the month, I'd expect it to stay there.”

Gale added that he can’t say with “100% certainty” that the average heat record will be surpassed, but that a major mid-August cold front does not appear likely.

Even Bill Ponder doesn't bring much hope for change the next two weeks.

On a side note, I am very interested in the Tempest WeatherFlow weather station he advertises. I've seen all good reviews. Anyone on here have one of those stations? I know it's on the pricier side, but looks so easy to install. Just wondering how it holds up to hail(?). Right now, it would only track the daily max records and heat index!

Looks like any relief over the next week will be limited to areas south of IH-10, where a tropical depression or storm may move into south TX on Tuesday. Unfortunately I don't think the southward shifts in the model guidance are done yet, and maybe Corpus southward is the only part of the state to get some rain.

This summer pattern is just so depressing. :(

Currently 109 in Heath. On the bright side, humidity is only 17%.

The FWD AFD is encouraging:

An easterly wave is still forecast to impact parts of South Texas
by midweek and may bring showers and thunderstorms to parts of
Central Texas Tuesday and Wednesday. Otherwise, the area will
remain hot and dry through the end of next week as the ridge
slides back over Oklahoma and North Texas Thursday into Friday of
next week.
Heat headlines will likely be continued through next
week due to the continued oppressive heat, and the persistent hot
and dry pattern will cause elevated fire weather conditions into
next week as well.

I've had one for a few years now and have never had any issues with it. Solar powered, doesn't need batteries. Detects lightning. Seems to be accurate with rainfall and temperatures. I think mine reads dewpoints a bit too high. I can't speak to wind measurements, since I have too many trees in my neighborhood to ever gauge how accurate that is. Definitely recommend!

Nah, I'd say it's a certainty.

Adding up all the high and low temperatures:

2936+2245 86.35 avg. June 2023
3207+2420 90.76 avg. July 2023
1800+1326 91.94 avg. August 1–17, 2023
7943+5991 89.32 avg. Summer 2023 so far
13,934

2998+2227 87.08 avg. June 2011
3166+2393 89.66 avg. July 2011
3250+2434 91.68 avg. August 2011
9414+7054 89.50 avg. Summer 2011
16,468

16,468–13,934=2,534
2,534÷28=90.50 required average for August 18–31, 2023

Commanche, TX Airport reporting 113F :sun:

FW Spinks at 111F is the highest that I'm seeing currently in the metroplex... ugly.

I've given up on this pattern breaking down. Every time it looks like we are entering the last week of this pattern, the models double back down. Might as well just bet persistence and paint 100F+ until mid-September.

Currently 110 here. I wonder if we can reach 116 again like yesterday. At this point let’s just shoot for 120, maybe 121 and beat the all time hottest Texas temp. :spam:
