Forget about fantasy land in 2 weeks. Later this week and weekend look absolutely brutal encroaching on 110 for DFW. Parts of the area will probably see that given the current forecast tends.

Let's not get too OT here
I’ve never even heard of that event in my life, much less knowing it was in the 1990’s. I don’t even know what that is or how to properly pronounce it.
The Rwanda Genocide:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-26875506
The term "cockroach" is still used publicly in various places around the world to terrorize disfavored ethnic groups. It's as offensive as the "N" word to many of us with east African roots. "Hotel Rwanda" is a good film about this. That's the last I will say on this subject.
I'll only comment this last time as well, but as sad as the Hotel Rwanda story is (I remember watching the movie about it), it has zero to do with TX weather, or what Ice posted using the word cockroach. Context is everything. Are you suggesting we all stop using the word cockroach? Your original post doesn't explain Ice's post and its connection to your reference at all.

Man, here in Houston, we seriously cannot take this lack of rain. My yard, even with daily watering is crispy. The sun is scorching it all regardless of the watering. It's brutal.

Re: Texas Summer 2023
I asked ChatGPT the following two questions.
is the word cockroach offensive?
The word cockroach can be offensive depending on the context and the intention of the speaker. As a noun, a cockroach is a type of insect that is usually considered as a pest and a source of disgust. However, as an adjective or a metaphor, a cockroach can be used to insult or dehumanize a person or a group of people, especially those who are marginalized, oppressed, or persecuted. For example, some people use the term cockroach to refer to immigrants, refugees, ethnic minorities, political opponents, or religious groups that they dislike or fear. This can be seen as a form of hate speech that incites violence and discrimination.
According to some sources¹²³⁴⁵, the word cockroach has been used as a derogatory term in various historical and contemporary contexts, such as:
- The Nazi propaganda that portrayed Jews as vermin and cockroaches during the Holocaust.
- The Rwandan genocide that involved the Hutu extremists calling the Tutsi population as inyenzi, which means cockroaches in Kinyarwanda.
- The Bosnian war that involved the Serb nationalists calling the Bosnian Muslims as balije, which means cockroaches in Serbian.
- The Turkish-Kurdish conflict that involved some Turkish nationalists calling the Kurdish people as pkk roaches or kurdish roaches on social media.
- The Syrian civil war that involved some pro-government supporters calling the anti-government protesters as cockroaches or rats.
- The Rohingya crisis that involved some Myanmar Buddhists calling the Rohingya Muslims as bengali roaches or kalars, which means black or foreigner in Burmese.
- The U.S.-Mexico border crisis that involved some anti-immigration activists calling the undocumented immigrants as cockroaches or invaders.
As you can see, the word cockroach can have a very negative and harmful connotation when used to describe human beings. It can imply that they are inferior, unwanted, disgusting, or deserving of extermination. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid using this word in such a manner, as it can be seen as offensive, disrespectful, and hateful. Instead, it is better to use more respectful and accurate terms to refer to people of different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and opinions. Thank you for using Bing!

what is a cockroach death ridge in weather?
A cockroach death ridge is not a term that is commonly used in meteorology, but it is a slang expression that some people use to describe a very hot and dry weather pattern that can be harmful to living organisms, especially insects like cockroaches. A death ridge is a high-pressure system that prevents clouds and rain from forming, and traps heat near the surface of the earth. A death ridge can cause temperatures to soar above normal levels, sometimes reaching record highs. A death ridge can also create poor air quality, drought conditions, and increased fire danger.
One example of a death ridge occurred in the southeastern U.S. over the Memorial Day weekend in 2019². The heat wave was so intense that it broke several records for the hottest May temperatures ever recorded in some cities. The heat index, which measures how hot it feels when humidity is factored in, reached as high as 115 degrees Fahrenheit in some places³. The heat wave was also accompanied by a severe drought that affected many parts of the region.
Another example of a death ridge is expected to affect the western U.S. this week¹. According to a weather enthusiast on YouTube, the death ridge will bring temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit to many areas, and create severe weather conditions for other parts of the country. The video also shows some maps and models that illustrate the weather pattern and its impacts¹.
If you are interested in learning more about weather phenomena, you can visit the National Weather Service website⁴, where you can find forecasts, warnings, maps, and other information for your location. You can also watch some educational videos on YouTube or other platforms that explain how weather works and what causes different types of weather events.

I fear my next water bill. All I appear to be doing right now is providing water for the cockroaches and other insects. The grass is still getting scorched, even after a 30 minute watering.

Re: Texas Summer 2023
Hmmm...something tells me the season could be interesting for us. 12z Euro shows the initial wave tighten up into a closed low and move inland, but towards the end of the run, it shows another disturbance in the Gulf moving towards the Texas coast. I really do think that this drought is likely going to end from some sort of tropical impacts. Almost all of our droughts end from a major change in our weather pattern which usually results in excessive rain.

I would suggest watering less frequently, but for longer duration when you do, which will soak the ground deeper and promote deeper root growth for your grass. Surface soil moisture in this heat will evaporate much faster than moisture a bit deeper. Although, with this drought and with this heat, you will still likely see heat stress due to the ambient air temperature no matter what you do.

That has been happening to my Squash, Cucumbers, Zucchini, and Watermelons despite the frequent watering.

Re: Texas Summer 2023
You’re from Texarkana. Y’all have the best weather in the state. Not even close either. You might as well say you live in another state cuz your weather doesn’t resemble Texas weather whatsoever.

Agreed - For about the last week, I've been concerned about the pattern evolution as we head into the heart of the season. Yes, we need rain but those Gulf water temps are scary. Not a drop of rain here since about July 2nd. Hopefully the end of the drought doesn't come all at once.
