Yeah, it’s terrible. Probably no relief from the tropics either. I believe everything will remain well east of Texas this hurricane season.

Agreed. The ridge looks to remain parked from TX to the Desert SW into August. That likely won't allow for tropical waves to even make it here. Things can change but it doesn't look promising for any heat relief here anytime soon.

Can anyone explain to me why we aren’t getting the typical El Niño benefit (wetter/cooler) in Texas?

Hey guys!
I noticed the Off Topic forum isn’t as busy as it once was, but I still enjoy going back and reading old posts there. I hope it’s ok that I ask my question here instead.
I would like to buy a home weather station. I’ve looked at a few, but I’m a little lost on what good brands are and what features to make sure I get. We have fast internet and a metal roof, if that makes a difference.
If someone has recommendations, I would really appreciate it.
I’m in Anderson County, Texas and we had 10 minutes of much needed rain tonight at my house. It won’t fill the pond back up, but it was nice all the same.
Thanks everyone.

I have a Tempest Weather Station by WeatherFlow. I bought it a few years ago. It has worked great. No moving parts, but still measures the full array of weather data including lightning detection. It's solar powered and has no batteries to climb up to replace. The rainfall measurements seem to be very accurate. The app is simple and works great. I would recommend it to anyone.

I have measured at least 0.01" rainfall 8 out of 10 days to start off July. That's pretty incredible for this time of year!

Also, I remember El Niño summers of the past often being hot and dry. Seems like most of the rain comes duri
G the spring and fall during El Niño.

It's been wacky. But not unprecedented. The wet, cool El Nino's tends to be central Pacific driven. Meaning westerly wind burst, warming happens a lot in the CPAC from the IDL to Nino 3.4. Years like 2002, 2004, 2018 etc.

So far this has been heavily eastern based, lack of WWBs with a Mexican heat ridge similar to years like 1972, 2006, 2015 which were hotter, drier summers.

It has been humid which is consistent with El Nino. The northern parts of the southern plains have seen this result in lack of 100+ days, but still feels hot consistently. The southern end is near the Mexican ridge and has felt it.

Does this integrate with WeatherUnderground by chance? And how big is the outside unit? I'm looking for a PWS for my 2nd home in Colorado...something small enough that the HOA won't complain and I can monitor conditions remotely. I had one from Acurite a couple of years ago that worked really well - it was basically just a temp sensor that had WiFi connectivity to the indoor unit and then uploaded to WU. Unfortunately the inside unit died and Acurite no longer supplies that system. In a sick way it's fun to check in and see morning temps in the 30s up there when we're suffering through 100s in NTX.

Yup. PDO has been strongly negative since December 2019 and isn't showing any signs of letting up. (June was -2.59)

Amazing to look at that historic near-decade stretch of very strong -PDO between 1948-1957.

:uarrow: The Dust Bowl occurred from 1930 to 1936.

Extreme NE Texas is well above normal for rainfall for month to date, for the past 3 months and year to date. The same can be said for areas to our north, east, and south.

Will it track and store the historic weather at our house so I can see it at a glance, maybe in calendar form?
Sorry for all the questions, and I appreciate your help!

Yes, it does integrate with WeatherUnderground - I have mine set up there. The outside unit is pretty small - maybe 8-9" tall and about 6-7" circumference at the top. Their website has a pretty good community where people have shared a ton of custom mounting techniques and other cool things (setting up the app to display on a cheap tablet mounted on a wall in your living room, for example).

Yes, historic weather data can be accessed from the app. I can select data by the day, week, month, year, and all-time. I haven't researched customization in a long time, but there's an online community that discusses ways to view and manipulate the data. If you are tech savvy at all it probably isn't too hard. Otherwise the app does what I need in this regard. WeatherUnderground also has this functionality if you set up your weather station on their website.

I'm under a River Flood Watch, not a Flood Watch.

It looks like a Flood Watch until you take a closer look at it.

All I can say is I can’t wait for the days of cooler and rainy weather. This summer has been atrocious. Just as bad as last summer. You guys elsewhere that have been getting rain are very lucky. I’ve had maybe one inch in the past 6 or 7 weeks.
