I remember it well. Guess this qualifies me as an old guy now (well into my 50s) but 1980 is still the benchmark summer for me personally here in Grayson County.

That summer of 1980 was the first full summer I lived here (my dad moved my family here when he went to work for Texas Instruments and when I was in middle school).

While I have lived in Denison (moved here the previous fall and have lived here in the years since then, along with some years commuting to UNT sprinkled in) it was worse that summer over in Wichita Falls.

That infamous summer of 1980, WF recorded their all-time record high temperature with 117 degrees on June 28. The day before, it was the previous all-time high record of 116. And the day before that…well, you get the picture.

In fact, seven of WF's top 10 hottest temperatures were in a stretch from June 26 to July 3 that year and it takes a reading of 113 to even get on that "Top 10" list.

If you live here in Texas for any length of time, significant summer heat shows up eventually.

I was 9 that summer. I still remember riding in the back seat of the station wagon with its vinyl seats which felt like sitting on hot coals. Mom would leave a towel on the steering wheel during the day (things like sun shades for the windshield and cooled seats didn't exist back then) so she could avoid burning her hands when she'd get in the car.

What I remember most was shortly after school started (late Aug) we had our first "real" rain in forever. We were outside at recess and the teachers let us run around like maniacs and just enjoy the moment.

Even though 2011 had more total 100 degree days, 1980 is still the high water mark as far as I'm concerned.

Odds of a strong El Niño this winter are currently at 50%, according to the Climate Prediction Center, with the odds of at least a moderate El Niño at more than 80%.

The summer of 1980 was the all timer. I remember it well but being young didn’t think much of it… we hit the community pool A LOT. And didn’t have internet or cable news, weather channel etc. talking about it 24/7.

Summer of 2011 doesn’t get much play in the media but it was as brutal as 1980 in many ways, and very close on some metrics like 100+ days. Summer nights don’t cool down like they used to, which you could really feel in 2011 (as in this heat wave).

Temperature gradients have been really interesting with this heat wave. Just casually observing, it looks like the 100 degree isotherm has been hugging I-35 pretty closely. Normally I think of most of NTX - esp the immediate metroplex - as being within 2-3 degrees of each other when it gets hot like this.

Yesterday for example - Denton hit 105. McKinney only 96. Dallas Love was 101, FTW Meacham 105. Southwest OK had some really wild swings over a short distance as well. Cheyenne at one point was 89 while just down the road in Erick it was 107.

Today has been running 1-2 degrees cooler than yesterday so there's hope that it won't be quite as brutal as forecast.

Had to drive up to Carrollton earlier and was thinking it's not going to be as hot as forecast. According to the NWS site it is 97 degrees at 2:06. I don't think we see the 105-107 that was forecasted just yesterday. Also the lower dews are making a difference. Still too hot though.

In other news...it has been so long since we have seen a REAL El Nino Pacific. Haven't seen a true EQ->STJ jet like this in a long time. Lately been dominated by the NPAC jet.

hopefuly we don't get a strong El Nino Fall/Winter like we did in 2015/16. That Winter went down as one of the top 5 warmest Winters on record.

2006, 1925, and 1911 were oncoming El Nino's. 1998 was an outgoing one. What an interesting set!

2011 and 1980 were neutral to cool ENSO following La Nina's. So essentially 2nd or 3rd year no Nino.

So 2022 being DFW's fourth hottest summer on record was by the book. We have a general guideline of what odds are with what ENSO phase summers may trend.
