
That summer of 1980 was the first full summer I lived here (my dad moved my family here when he went to work for Texas Instruments and when I was in middle school).
While I have lived in Denison (moved here the previous fall and have lived here in the years since then, along with some years commuting to UNT sprinkled in) it was worse that summer over in Wichita Falls.
That infamous summer of 1980, WF recorded their all-time record high temperature with 117 degrees on June 28. The day before, it was the previous all-time high record of 116. And the day before that…well, you get the picture.
In fact, seven of WF's top 10 hottest temperatures were in a stretch from June 26 to July 3 that year and it takes a reading of 113 to even get on that "Top 10" list.
If you live here in Texas for any length of time, significant summer heat shows up eventually.
