Mary, I got my 1970 journal out when I read your post. On Wednesday, August 12, 1970, I wrote..."Two days and a wake up and I'll be leaving this place for a little while. I sure wish it was permanently because I'm ready to go home anytime..."

Kris's two weeks is such a lift for a soldier. My time was spent in Hawaii. His time here with family and friends will be just great. Mary, please give him my personal thanks when you see him. Giving a big part of your life for a cause you believe in is a wonderful thing...but often not easy.

You should be proud of your daughters...both of them! Although you may not believe it as they grow through the teen years, miracles such as you describe about Kris' picture speak volumes of their hearts and souls. Hope you get a picture of them with Kris, too.

Thank you all for your wonderful support and well wishes! Sure warms my heart.

I'll fill you all in on a secret - Kris and his wife, my niece, think they are surprising a huge family gathering on Thanksgiving Day. By popping in and driving up from Tennessee. His wife swore her mother to secrecy. Well.....her mother just couldn't keep that good news to herself. So now everyone at this dinner (40+ people) will have banners, flags, yellow ribbons tied on trees, welcome home signs, just plastered all over the place. You don't know how hard is to keep this good news to myself but I have. So after their dinner is over, and ours is too with my mom, we're all popping in for another surprise later in the evening. Got all that? I know, it's confusing......and we're not telling my mom until that day. We're afraid she'll blow it b/c technically Kris is home now. Anyone could call him and say - hi, looking forward to seeing you on Thanksgiving. In fact, I'm supposed to call him......mmmmm, maybe I should to throw him off. LOL We all ordered Army shirts with the 101st logo on them, with his name on the sleeve. Wish they had come in - we could have all worn them. Let's just say Kris will know we're all behind him! And I'll pass along your gratitude too. Thanks again.

Mary

Mary, that's great news. I understand completely how you feel. Shed a few tears myself reading your post. My nephew and his wife are in the Marines and were in Afganistan at Christmas time sooooo, I understand the worry, relief and tears. ((Hugs)) to you Auntie.

As others have said, please give your wonderful nephew ((Hugs)) from all of us here. Tell him how very proud we are of him and that our prayers are always with him.

Miss Mary wrote:As some of you know, my niece's husband Kris has been serving with the 101st in Iraq/Kuwait since Feb. 2003. He flies into Ft. Campbell, KY today to begin a 15 day leave! As I type he's on his way, flying in from Ireland, of all places. But this trip is so important. He has described such horrible conditions but thru it all, he's kept the most amazing positive can-do attitude for someone so young (he's 28). We've supported him with letters/postcards/notes and packages (dozens of sox, candy, treats, essentials, etc.) and comics (my daughter's influence!). Yes I'm known as the Aunt who sends the most comfortable sox......so now I'm on the hunt for the goofiest looking sox out there, for a xmas gag gift.

It was understood he would stay home and rest for 2 weeks. But now we hear he's coming up for Thanksgiving before he goes back. And we get to see him! Big secret though. He doesn't know we're going to pop in on that family celebration, after we have our own dinner. So I'll be writing you all about our visit with him in 2 weeks. I just know I'll cry! About to cry right now thinking about him........we've been so very worried about him. You just don't know how much. My daughter puts pictures of friends and relatives on her bulletin board. And each night she prays for them, in her nightly prayers (all done on her own, w/o my urging). Kris' picture is smack in the middle, he's smiling in that photo in his uniform. Taken the night before the War started.

Can't wait to hug him!

Mary
That is Awesome!!! Very Happy for you!!!! :) :) Tell him thanks for protecting my freedom  I appreciate him and all the heroes :D

Sad news for some of his comrades. I'm glad he was already out of there and on his way from Ireland.

Johnathan and stormchazer - I will tell him! Thanks for your support. That's a given ya know - we so appreciate those that support our troops over there. Did any of us want war? No, I can't say anyone did but we all know what they're doing over in Iraq is very important work. Shawn, the latest casualties and so many from the 101st is very hard to take. And one shares a last name with Kris - Sullivan.

Update - Kris is home now, and we will see him on Thanksgiving! We're so looking forward to that but he still doesn't know we're going to pop in. My girls are so excited. This young man has sure made an impression on my family!

Thanks again everyone for your very, very kind words - I so love our comraderie here at Storm2K. You're all the very best!

Update!!!

Kris and Kara decided to come to Cincinnati early, after he had a week to rest near the Army base at Ft. Campbell. They came in this past Monday and really wanted to see us. I missed a call from Kris on Tuesday but it sure was great to hear that voice on my answering machine - Hi Aunt Mary, this is Kristopher, we're in town and staying at Ken and Linda's, I'd really like to see you, I love you guys, call me.... - well I began tearing up and told my family - don't you erase that message!!!! It's still on my machine. Then our original plans got all changed around. He wanted to see us on Wednesday and how do you say no - sorry too busy, etc. - b/c you secretly were planning on seeing him today, Thanksgiving at that huge family gathering? You can't!!! So we set a time and I picked my mom up. We had a nice 2 hour visit with them all! Kris and Kara, my niece, her parents, my other niece and her boyfriend. It's hard to describe how so very excited we all were to see eachother! Kris thanked us for all our cards, letters, packages. He loved my caramel popcorn! He said he had to fight off his buddies for it. I'm going to send him another batch in time for xmas. Packages are taking about 2 weeks to arrive in Iraq, FYI for anyone who needs to know that. Used to be 3 weeks. We asked him what it was like to come home. He said he didn't care so much for the food, that wasn't a big priority - a shower and a real bed was. He got very quiet and said - you just don't appreciate how good we have it over here until you're in conditions like he was. He finally drove again, but in a parking lot (he's been in Iraq and/or Kuwait since last February). He said that felt so odd and traffic lights and interstates just all seemed so strange to him. Aaron might relate to some of this (VanceMan). He still has the most amazing positive outlook on what he has to do over there. Kris said he has no other choice, you just have to stay in shape (he's so fit, they all work out he said, just in case you have only your body to fight with, lots of sit ups, push ups, etc.) and think positive. However, it doesn't help to learn of more 101st soldiers killed over there. He knows of several going thru divorces. The wives just couldn't handle it and told their husbands so in letters. I just can't imagine that. You want to shake those women like crazy - what are you thinking? Shaking my head here.

So now we've seen Kris, heard his voice, looked at his proud face, hugged him at least 20 times. He teared up, we teared up, he hugged us so tight. 1 year ago I hardly knew him! Look what this war has done - taken 2 relatives (and my kids) related technically by marriage, who only vaguely knew eachother - and made us both so much closer. It's a bond that will never be broken I tell him. He is MY nephew! My family always wondered what it would be like to have a boy - my mom had 4 granddaughters. And now we know!

My husband convinced me to stay home today and we're now cooking a small turkey. My mom is having dinner with us here. So this whole day got changed around. But the important thing is we got see Kris and he knows how important he is to ALL of us. He goes back on Saturday and I could tell he does not want to go back. But he knows he has to.

Thanks for reading everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!!!

Great news Mary. Sounds like it worked out just perfect. I'll just bet, too, that you can see how much he believes in what he is doing, too. While he'd rather not go back...he knows it is an important thing to do.

Nice Thanksgiving story, and a real one to boot!
