For you OLD married couples

#1 Postby azsnowman » Fri Nov 14, 2003 8:34 am

Here's a question for all of us OLD married couples "LOL!" How did you meet and how long before you married?

Me.....I met Michelle thru a personal ad someone DARED me to put in the local paper. I was still cutting meat at the time, one of my co workers DARED me to put a *singles ad* in the paper. In 4 days I got this letter from Michelle, we sat up a time to meet......she of COURSE was "LATE!" by 1 hour, I had given up, just about that time, she came roaring up in a Foresty pickup, apologized for being late. We hit it off that SECOND our eyes met! Within 3 "WEEKS" she had moved in with me, we planned on getting married in Feb. (We met Sept 9th 1997) my parents, sisters kept HOUNDING us to get married even sooner, we were/still are VERY happy......SO, to make a long story short, we married on New Years Eve 1997, "4 months" later!!! All my friends said I was jumping in too soon.......it blows their mind to this day that we are STILL like newlyweds!

And the rest as they say......."Is History!"

As I said in another thread. I met Vicki (my wife) on a double date. My fiancee, my best friend (ex-best friend now), his fiancee (Vicki) and I went out on a double date. About a month later, both engagements broke off for unrelated reasons. This was right before New Years so I called Vicki and asked if she would like to commiserate together for New Years Eve. To make a long story short, 4 months later we moved in together and a year later we got married! :-) All from a double date in 1984! We're still going strong :-)

Another Strange but true story......

I met my wife when I was home on leave from Advanced Training during my tour in the Army. I was home as a recruiters assistant for 45 days before I was shipped off to Hawaii. We dated for those 45 days and kind of drifted our own separate ways while I was gone for 3 years. I visited her when I was home on leave and called her every Sunday and wrote letters. After those three years, I was transfered to Texas. I spent two years in Texas, all the while talking to her, but never went home to see her. For her birthday in 1990 (June), I sent her a plane ticket to come to Texas and visit. Now remember, we haven't seen each other in over two years at this point. Anyway, she arrived Sunday evening, June 17th, 1990. Monday I asked her to marry me, Tuesday morning we went and got the license and were married Tuesday afternoon. Like snowman and dolphin, we are still going strong 13 years later. No-one alive ever thought that we'de make it past 3 years.

*chuckles* I porbably don't qualify as old in the spirit of the question- but I felt the need to chime in if only because we met in 1994... and :P that's a pretty long time ago. Took 3 years to start dating, another 4.5 to get engaged- another year to get married, and we just celebrated our 6th dating anniversary last month. :D

My wife and I were introduced by a mutual college friend back in 1990. He knew we were both single and not dating anyone - and that we were both Phillies fans. So our first meeting was a trip to Atlantic City. Our friend who introduced us drove (as neither my wife nor I had ever been there). Of course, we both had a lot of fun and I knew right away that I liked her. We then went out together - just the 2 of us - later that week. And things blossomed from there.

We actually were together for over 10 years before we finally got married. We kept putting off a wedding because we wanted to save $$$ for a really nice ceremony/reception. But we never did save much, so we eventually decided we better get hitched before we're 40 - and went into quite a bit of debt to have that really great wedding we had always wanted.

We met in a bar off base in Oceanside, CA you old folks might remember the Zodiac if from that area. Anyway, met there on August 29, 1987, he moved in by the end of September 1987 got engaged on December 24 1987, He was gonna ask on Thanksgiving Day, but my friend told him I found out so he made me wait a month! - but didn't get married for many various reasons until 1997 (we were together almost the whole time) missing only the time he was away in the service. Still happily married today (and they said it wouldn't last).

When I was just finishing HS, Kathy was a babysitter for my sister's two boys. They lived right next door. As I got into college, had a few dating experiences with others, etc, I stayed friends with her family and would sometimes see them on weekends. Then it led to a date for a school dance, etc., where she was the star because she had a college boyfriend. We stuck it out through her HS days and my college days, each of us wandering in and out of other friendships but always best friends.

So, I robbed the cradle, we eventually calculated we dated for almost six years before I got shipped off to Vietnam and she got a taste of life after high school with her friends and some not-so-friendly bottles of Cold Duck.

We were engaged before I left for my tour of duty, but when I came back she was a different person full of independence and attitude. I was full of anger and frustration. We walked down the aisle 2 months later and didn't like each other much. Til death do us part seemed imminent at times.

But alas...we discovered our common bond and used our major differences to our advantage...growing in different ways, but with some similar lifelong objectives. Family, friends, and whatever else came along.

I'm the only guy she ever seriously dated. She's the only girl I ever seriously cared about.

32 years later, we're best friends. We scrap and fight and don't always see eye to eye, but we also appreciate the best in each other. She's the extrovert who everyone just loves to be around. Vibrant and full of life...even a dose of piss and vinegar.

I'm the steady rock. The constant. The planner. The one who takes the waves away from rough waters. The one whose spontaneity is passing with every day that goes by.

Guess that's why we have made it and are happy to proclaim our loyalty, trust, and obligation to each other.

I met my hubby when he was a customer at the gas station where I worked , for a highschool credit class. We dated for several months and he asked me to marry him and I said yes. He is 6 years older than I am and we will be married 29 years in Jan. People said we wouldn't last 5 years, what did they know.

I was the horny happy go lucky get it any way I could college guy looking for an easy hit at orientation. I was working on campus and going to summer school. I knew most of the orientation advisors so there was no problem going to the mixer they had. Me and a friend spotted these two gorgeous "chicks" one with flaming red hair and one with straight jet black hair that went all the way to her butt. I chose the one with the black hair and we hit it off from the moment we met. It truly was love at first sight!!!!! We could have gone to a big party that night where all sorts of alcohol and drugs were available, but we chose to stay on campus and "enjoy" ourselves. Next morning we were supposed to meet before they left and exchange numbers, etc. Didn't happen due to a severe thunderstorm!!!! 3 months later I finally decided this was going to be the day I found my love or moved on. We were meant to be together, because she had bought a dog and skipped class with her friend and was sitting in an open area between buildings when I passed by scanning everyone looking for her. I didn't recognize her because she had cut half her hair off, but her friend saw me and hollered. That was October 20, 1971 exactly 3 months after I met here on July 20th. We started dating, got engaged December 31, 1971 and married May 20, 1972. Almost 32 years later we are still going strong!!! BTW, I robbed the cradle!!! I was 20 and she was 18 and of course we were told we would never make it. One of the loudest saying that has been through 3 husbands that we know of so far!! They didn't count on our committment being so strong. We made a comittment to each other, to God, and to our friends and families that day we married to do everything in our power to make it work and we h ave through the rough and the smooth.

i have know my husband since i was about 14. i was really good friends with his sister. he didnt even know i was around. but i was watching, this went on for years and i watch him go thru a marriage and then a divorce. i picked him up that year to take him to va, for turkey day , as i was going to see his sister and she asked me too. he was so cute and we had a good time. ky to va. i didnt know that he was engaged. again he married and i was a day late and a dollar short. but this marriage also lasted less than a year. she had alot of emotional problems and had to be put away for a while, and wanted nothing todo with him. well then we saw each other again and that was it, we fell in love. now this was not easy as it was a long distance relationship, he lived in va and i lived in fla. we have been married since 85. 2 kids and for the most part happy. they say 3 time is a charm. well i think i will keep him.

I met my wife in the emergency room. She had just started working the switchboard and it was located inside the ER by the doorway. I was a EMT/Firefighter and would pass through those doors quite often. Well one nite I rolled in on a stretcher doing CPR on shooting victim and our eyes met. After I cleaned up from the mess I started talking to her and my buddy who also worked the switchboard was training her. One of my Paramedic buddys was having a party at his lake house that weekend so I asked her to it. Of course she was thrilled to go so I thought this could lead to something. Little did I know she had other intentions. It turns out she had the eye for my medic friend who was having the party. She had no idea that he was engaged at the time.

We hit it off anyway so it turned out for the good. After 6 months of dating her parents sold their place and moved back north so we moved in together. We lived together for a few years and then got married. That was 1991 and we are still together. It was her second marriage and my first & only. She is 5 years older then me so I guess she robbed the cradle.

One more interesting aside to Susan's and my relationship. We were both born in the same hospital in Wichita, KS and had the same pediatrician for the first 2 years of her life!!(I moved away when she was 2) We even lived about 1/2 mile form each other, but never met(that we know of)till that fateful day in college.

Good topic Dennis! I met my husband Jim thru friends, 2 of whom are his sisters! I was going thru a sad divorce, after having married my HS sweetheart at age 20. I just didn't believe in a 3 way marriage, with his g/f in the middle. He would have though....LOL I eventually said that's it, I deserve better than this. And filed for an annullment. Then I was floundering, not fitting in with friends from marriage #1, or with coworkers (most happily married). I reconnected with a good friend from HS, still single. She just about grabbed me by the arm and said - come on, I know a fun group of people! She dragged me to a coed softball team she was on. Jim and his sisters were on it. So that's how we met - at the softball practice. I didn't join the team but went to a few games, partying afterwards (that why they formed a team in the first place!). For about a year, his sisters would routinely tell me - you know Jim really likes you.......or let's go see this band playing tonight (we were and still are into local live music), Jim's there. I didn't care for their pushing us together, not at all! And I suspected he would be "the one" and I would finally know what a committed relationship felt like. But I was still getting used to being on my own for the first time in my life. I didn't really want to jump back into a steady relationship. So I'd just say - oh, that's nice when they'd say he liked me. This went on for about a year until we both attended his sister's couples bridal shower. Jim didn't want to go until he heard I was going. I went, because I knew he'd be there. And well, the rest as they say is history. His sister just loves telling this story - her bridal shower did it. We just clicked that night.......and I couldn't be happier.
