Maybe I spoke too soon.......

#1 Postby StormCrazyIowan » Wed Nov 12, 2003 3:05 pm

As I am sure you all well know, I have been venting my frustration about missing the storm!! Well, just thought it would be neat to mention that in the past 15 minutes, the sky has gone from perfectly blue to completely gray!! The winds have also picked up and knocked out power twice (only for seconds at a time, but still). Maybe all isn't said and done for me??

Yeesh. The wind is blowing pretty strong here too but nothing near High Wind Warning status. What does your forecast look like Jacki?

Statement as of 3:03 PM EST on November 12, 2003

...Damaging Winds Expected In Western And Northern New York Late Tonight And Thursday...

Winds will shift to the southwest behind a cold front across western New York around midnight and in the Genesee Valley by 300 am. Winds behind the front will increase to between 30 mph and 45 mph with gusts over 60 mph by daybreak. These winds speeds are capable of producing property damage, power outages and Downing of trees.

Strong winds blowing down the length of Lake Erie late tonight will cause a sudden rise of water levels on the Eastern Shores of the Lake. A coastal Flood Warning will be in effect for the Lakeshore areas of Chautauqua and Erie counties from midnight tonight until noon Thursday.

Statement as of 2:47 PM EST on November 12, 2003

The National Weather Service has issued a Lakeshore warning until noon EST Thursday for the following counties...

Chautauqua... northern Erie and southern Erie

... Lakeshore flooding warning in effect late tonight and Thursday for the Lake Erie shoreline from Dunkirk to the Buffalo Harbor and upper Niagara River...

A strong storm over the northern Great Lakes will move across southwest Ontario to the St Lawrence River by Thursday afternoon and continue to northern Maine Thursday evening.

Along Lake Erie... west gales to 35 knots will develop by midnight and increase to 50 knots storm force winds toward daybreak. The 50 knot winds will continue through Thursday before gradually subsiding late Thursday night and Friday morning.

The storm force winds will cause the level of Lake Erie to rise rapidly after 3 am and go above the flood stage of 8 feet between 6 am and 9 am Thursday morning before gradually subsiding Thursday afternoon. Combined with waves of 12 to 15 feet... these water levels will produce flooding along the Lake Erie shore including route 5 throughout the day Thursday.

People with interests along the Lakeshore should take precautions to protect property from high winds and waves. Stay tuned to your favorite source of weather information for further details or updates.

I think we can just repeat that here too here tomorrow with sustained winds of 35-45 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Sounds like a high wind warning to me for dc and baltimore and I think that will be upgraded in the morning to account for that!!

Stay safe everyone!!

parts of ontario still without power

#20 Postby tropicana » Sat Nov 15, 2003 5:49 pm

Rural Ontarians still powerless after storm

CANADIAN PRESS SAT NOV 15th 1pm

Close to 20,000 people across Ontario were still without power Saturday morning as Hydro One continued to repair power lines and poles after Thursday's severe windstorm.

While Hydro One hopes most of the customers should have power restored by Saturday night, some isolated communities might not have service restored until Sunday.

Hydro One is targeting the areas of Walkerton, Stayner, Penetang, Barrie, Hunstville, Nipissing, North Bay, Minden, Arnprior, Bancroft and Cobden for speedy resumption of service.

In the aftermath of Thursday's storm, over 160,000 people were left without power.

Hundreds of poles were snapped, many kilometres of conductor and other electrical equipment such as insulators, switches and transformers were damaged and broken after winds reached speeds of 110 kilometres per hour.
