Scary Columbine Type Threat Here in Southeast Texas

#1 Postby southerngale » Tue Nov 11, 2003 7:19 pm

This story has monopolized local news and I just saw it as a Drudge headline as well. Here a couple of local stories to explain the situation. Vidor is about 5 miles east of Beaumont. Parents have been understandably scared and many kids missed school today for fear that others are involved.

Two students detained, 3 barred from school over alleged "hit list"

Vidor-(AP) -- Vidor High School classes continue today after school officials found what they call "an apparent plot" against administrators and students.

At a news conference today, Vidor school Superintendent Robert Madding said five high school students apparently plotted to shoot more than 20 other high school students.

Madding said four high school administrators also apparently were targeted.

Reading from a prepared statement, Madding said no weapons were found with the students or anywhere on campus.

He said the threatened administrators and the parents of the threatened students were notified, as were local police and the FBI.

Madding says the district police department questioned the suspect students and had them removed from campus. All five have been barred from the campus, and two are in custody awaiting court appearances.

Madding promises additional security officers will be posted at all of the Vidor district's schools.

And here's one from earlier this afternoon by KFDM...

Vidor school superintendent Robert Madding read a statement Tuesday about the investigation into what officials call a hit list.
His statement is as follows:

"We discovered an apparent plot by 5 Vidor High School students to shoot more than 20 other Vidor High students and 4 Vidor High administrators.
No weapons were found with the students or anywhere on campus. The parents of the students who were threatened were immediately notified as were the threatened administrators.
Vidor police, the Orange County Sheriff's Department and the F.B.I. were immediately notified.
The Vidor school district police department questioned the students and had them removed from campus.
All five are barred from returning to school and two are in custody.
All five are minors.
Additional security officers will be on all VISD campuses and every precaution will be taken to ensure the safety of students and employees."
Sally MacDonald will have more on the story on KFDM News at 6.

Well, I'm glad that it was discovered and taken care of quickly before any tragedy could occur. I'm sure that there are alot of frightened parents and students out there.
