Snowcover up BIG-Time

#1 Postby CaptinCrunch » Tue Nov 11, 2003 3:31 pm

Well the latest weekly snowcover data shows that for week 44 of this calendar year is in from the Rutgers site (http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/monthchart.html), and the snowcover had reached among the highest levels since records began in the late 1960s. The Northern Hemispheric snowcover is the third largest behind 1976 and 1972 and the North American snowcover the second largest behind only 1991.

That is excellent news. I had been starting to get a little concerned about my winter forecast (for at least normal snows, if not above normal - and near normal temps - for the mid-Atlantic and Northeast). I was worried that I had overestimated snows and underestimated temperatures. But news like this is giving me a little more confidence in my prediction.

The NOAA will update it's Winter Outlook for 2003/04 November 20th. With the likely hood of a weak El Nino this winter this is sure to change the Temp and Precip outlook for the Southern and Southwestern parts of the US.

Hopefully all that snow cover means some big arctic outbreaks can make it all the down to the gulf coast. I want some snow this winter!

Thanks for the info. We shall see if this plays a major role in the weather this winter.
