Yes anyone who weighs so little could be considered anorexic- but trust me... please trust me, that there are people who weigh so little- especially it they are small framed- and 5'4 isn't exactly tall. If she were starved it's entirely possible for her to have weighed less than 80 pounds- above is a picture of a woman who weighed only 56. Fortunelty she doesn't suffer from anorexia- simply starvation.

Aside from the "too thin to be possible" viewpoint I don't have much to add- I really don't know anything about the controversy. But trust me- it's possible to weight that little. Anorexics do it all the time by fasting. That was just a picture that had an actual weight attached to it.

Jessica wasn't just being starved as the other prisoners were, but she was also suffering from severe injuries and numerous broken bones; including a fractured back. If healthy pow's lost 23-25 pounds or more, it's not difficult to imagine one who's critically injured losing even more in the same situation. We don't know for sure how much Jessica weighed the day of her capture, because she may have already lost 5-10 lbs from the 105-110 she weighed at Fort Bliss from being in the desert; my cousin Ben lost 20 pounds in six months during the first Gulf war, and he was nowhere near the battlefield.

I'm just thankful she is home safe with her family, and getting well :)

We will get to hear her story when she talks to Diane Sawyer on Friday. Hopefully all the rumors and such will come to an end when she tells all. God Bless Jessie!!

As some of you know, I stay between 100 and 105 pounds and my height is 5'11". I am not anorexic or bulimic. I eat foods everyday that most people would gain weight from... I have a fast metabolism and slow digestive system.

(Sorry for repeating myself to some of you, some people miss posts and of course we have plenty of new members). :)

You are lucky Tom. Most of us have to really work at it to stay thin. :)

I am hopefully coming to that point soon. My sister weighed a few pounds less than I did, she is several inches shorter than myself... not too long after she turned 30 she gained 10 to 15 pounds.

I think, if Jessica Lynch was anorexic, that would be a news story along with all the unfortunate, false, negative news we are hearing about her.

JetMaxx wrote:Jessica still has no feeling in her left foot (result of the fractured vertabra).....that has to be horrible. My great aunt breaks down and sobs sometimes because she has had virtually no feeling in her right hand since suffering a stroke in late May....she can't pickup things right anymore, is always dropping things; can't tell if she's burned herself while cooking -- it's horrible. Just imagine if it were your foot and lower leg totally numb...like its asleep all the time. I don't see how Jessica will ever walk normally again. I'd be scared to death of falling.

Actully you can manage quite well walking with no feeling in your feet. You do have to be careful and depending on other heath and injuries it can severly cramp your lifestyle, but it's entirely possible to walk with the affliction after a bit of training and getting accoustomed to it. It sucks. It really sucks. But it's possible- mother in law had gullian barre and afterwards couldn't feel a thing below her knees. I never knew her before that time and didn't know she had the problem until a family member told me several years after I first met her. My initial reaction was "NUH UH! Way cool!" (Okay so I was 17 at the time and not very mature...)

Once Lisa got to know you she'd do tricks to show off how little her feet could really feel and it was more of a "Look isn't it neat" thing to her 10 years after she lost the feeling. But she could rarely navigate rough terrain alone and stairs were especially hard for her.

I can't imagine living without feeling in any part of me and hope I never have to, but there are people who are survivors and just determined to be good sports about it- something tells me that Lyunch may be one of those people who adjust and come to peace with her injuries.

Anyone below 80 pounds on a person of average height 5 even and above should be looked at vefor signs of anorexia. A BMI of 20 is considered a generally "healthy" low weight and 80 pounds corresponds with a BMI of 20 at 4'5". 109 pounds at 5'2" corresponds with a BMI of 20. People can certainly be lower without causing medical harm or alarm, but they should have regular doctors checkups to make sure that thier low weight isn't impairing thier health. Fortunetly a large number of people with a low weight who are perfectly healthy are also quite good of taking care of thier bodies and talking to thier doctors. ;) Anorexia is a very serious and scary condition that should be treated as soon as it is discovered- some figures report that 1 out of every 10 anorexics die- thier deaths directly related to thier lifestyle and problems. That doesn't mean that anyone wit a low body weight has anorexia- simply that friends and family might want to look out for thier loved ones. :)

I'm nowhere near 109 pounds at my height of 5'2 *snorts and grins* I'll be keeping my ear open for more information on Lynch in the future- the case sounds fascinating and I was too wrapped up in the wedding to pay attention when it all happened.

That's true, Opera Ghost. I didn't see a doctor for a few years, since I lived in Massachusetts, the last time being in the late 1990's. (I lived in Massachusetts, moved to central Florida in June 2000).

In the last nine weeks I went to two doctors. One to get blood drawn and then my parents and me thought it would be best to see their primary doctor to make doubly sure things are alright with me, sure enough they are. Blood report was looked over by the second doctor (the doctor I am going to see next October). The receptionist said that they really hear "the doctor will see you in a year." -- because I live in a retirement community where six, four and even three month checkups are common.
