It does look like it *may* have gone through an eyewall meld, the eye was wobbling and rotating around, but now a slightly larger eye is clearing out and tops are cooling again

Yeah. I think upgrading to Cat 5 is the right call. Even if it only lasts for a single advisory, to me it definitely has enough evidence for 140kts

Looks like at the current rate of motion we have about 8 or 9 hours until landfall.

Man it really is hard to believe we're talking about a Cat 5 hurricane during the 2nd half of November!!

I'm confident that this really is a 5, a sub 920 mb pressure should be Cat 5... Andrew was 922 mb for comparison. A 917 is likely Cat 5... hopefully they do make the call, because I'm really getting worried that 2020 will try even harder for that C5 with Kappa at this rate next week

Give 2020 the bone already!!

Still at 920 MB

Is that an error on the N eyewall drop?

Look at those 155 kt winds just a little bit above the surface. It’s possible they could start mixing down if/when the eye fully clears out.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

sometimes you just gotta really wonder if there's something more to these coincidences! The I-curse continues... with the storm whose name, if I'm not mistaken, literally means the letter 'I'.

There it is, it tried multiple times but it looks like 2020 simply would not quit until it got its cat 5. And maybe this isn't even its peak, let's see what the next recon finds in 3 - 4 hours. If it were up to me I'd be all for a rapid collapse of Iota before landfall, but I'm afraid that Iota might just keep going. This is gonna cause so much destruction in CA.

Ok 2020, you did it!!.... now please weaken Iota for Central America's sake, and abort any future plans with Kappa.

Man, I'm in awe, what a hell of a November we're having!! This is truly historic folks.

Let's try not to come off as too celebratory here. We're all excited that 2020 produced a Category 5, but a lot of people are in serious danger from this storm right now.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

absence of radar data from San Andres is a bummer

Would you or anyone else mind providing a link to this and/or other radars in Nicaragua, Honduras, or Guatemala? Thank you in advance.

Unreal. Didn't think I'd live to see the day when that happened again but here we are. Absolutely ridiculous season.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Same, I stayed up all night and almost all morning for this. At least it was not anticlimactic

I mean just look at this timeline, it's just surreal. 4 out of the last 6 storms were major hurricanes.

As Phil K said, this season bruteforced its way to hyperactive status.

It feels like with Laura, Delta, Eta and now Iota that it also brute forced its way to a cat-5 through sheer numbers.

Definately looks more like a WPAC season, especially with the late season flurry of hurricanes which you often see in the WPAC.
