Wonder what's up with this.

Looks like they were avoiding the island maybe?

Winter 2020-2021 :cold:

All observations are in Tecumseh, OK unless otherwise noted.

Winter posts are focused mainly for Oklahoma & Texas.

Take any of my forecasts with a grain of salt, refer to the NWS, SPC, and NHC for official information

Wow... Idk why, but last night I thought there was a chance Iota would cap at a 3 or around there. Instead we have another high end Cat 4 (maybe a 5?) strengthening into landfall. There has never been a late season like this before.

Maybe they didn't want to/can't fly over the island?

I would think if you are on that island currently a plane flying above is the least of the things you are worried about.

The CDO is not quite smooth yet, suggesting that the system has not peaked.

Seems like it. Kinda odd we can fly over Cuba but not a tiny island of Nicaragua.

Recon is not going to fly over land during an intense storm for a variety of reasons IMO, we've heard numerous times about turbulence and other dangers.

How much more can this system possibly go? This is already insane, but the fact that Iota is seemingly not done is terrifying.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

I guess the upside is the wind field seems pretty compact so there’s that....

I think those islands are part of Columbia...Columbia was who issued their warnings.

Hopefully they'll have enough fuel for a S to N pass on the way out

Yes I was wondering the same, perhaps didn't want SFMR misreading because of the very shallow waters around the Isla de Providencia.
