It looks like it failed before it hit the surface, it only goes down to 903mb.

I agree that dropsonde probably had major errors.

It's clearly wrong, it didn't reach the actual sea level.

137kt at the 903 mb level looks correct. However, that's roughly 1000 feet above ground. Unfortunately the surface data is missing for this drop

If the eye fully clears out Iota will be a category 5, and given the current trends it has a legit chance of doing so.

Another late season monster. Whatever quality deficit the season was showing earlier has most definitely been canceled. The southwest Caribbean is the typical last cocoon of deep favorability late in the season...but it frequently skates by untapped. Not this year.

I'm just sitting here jaw dropped with nothing left to say about this season, we are in legitimately unrealistic and uncharted territory here that no longer makes any sense and all I can do is stare in absolute bewilderment

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Only the fifth year in history that there has been FIVE CAT 4+ Hurricanes after 1933, 1961, 1999, and 2005. Only second time there has been five Category 4 (excluding 5) Hurricanes with the other year being 1999.

Crazy times...

1933: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1933_At ... ane_season

1961: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1961_At ... ane_season

Constraints aside this is worthy of a DT of T7.0 at this point. Don't think I've ever seen W so thick on an Atlantic storm before (in Dvorak ehanchement).

Okay so I was away for a while and I told to myself 'expect a high end cat 2 or a low end cat 3 when you get back, probably 950 mb'. And now I read the posts and see a 935 mbar cat 4 with a 10+ mbar pressure drop in between passes. Out of everything 2020 has thrown at us this is the most surreal thing yet. If it keeps strenghtening the next 2 recon missions be historic. And unfortunately this means that the disaster in Nicaragua and Honduras might become even more destructive than we thought.

Get a little more sleep... hit a bird on takeoff and slightly delayed.
