Likely a gust, but would support 85 knots.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Looking at the sat presentation looks like it will cross were the boot comes off the coast line and another eyewall for Biloxi/Gulfport my third at least it will be short this go round.

aspen wrote:Recon reports that the eyewall is open to the NW, which probably explains why the winds in that quadrant are so light.
The wind asymmetry is forecast well by the hurricane models, showing considerably stronger wind in the eastern quadrant. HMON shows 135 kt 850 mb wind at landfall on the east semicircle, but only around 65 kt on the western semicircle.

Opal was the same way. I remember standing on the front porch shivering in the north wind as NW FL was getting 130 mph gusts.
Latest satellite does look very impressive for late October storm, even more so within the last few hours. And moving right along, this won't weaken much.

Re: ATL: ZETA - Hurricane - Discussion
The fact that the pressure is high compared to the relatively high FL winds is again another sign of how the atmosphere surrounding the cyclone is allowing Zeta to become stronger than SST's, shear profile, and Climatology would predict otherwise. Zeta is going to do some fascinating things over the next day or so, and from a meteorological standpoint this will be a fairly unique event.

Re: ATL: ZETA - Hurricane - Discussion
Zeta continues to put on a show as the cyclone begins to approach the coastline in the next several hours. Here we are seeing another cyclone ramping up just before landfall, which continues this common.occurance with Gulf cyclones here in 2020.

This is definitely strengthening due to enhancement from the trough picking it up.

Seems like Zeta also wants to test the WMO’s policy on Greek name retirement.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.
