It just seemed a little broad, and a PTC would’ve been playing it safe while still getting advisories and warnings out.

Many tropical depressions start with a broad circulation. The origins of this system is pure tropical.

Agreed.
At the same time it’s a safe bet that this won’t be a short lived system relatively speaking and is gonna organize further and has some slight evidence of a TD like system at the moment so I can see why the pulled the trigger on it right now.

18z was @18.5N/83.2W... The MLC/future LLC is @60 miles SE of the 18z... I think the Ukmet/Euro had more WNW before turning NW so any reform S of 18z we May see the 5 day spot farther W into Central LA vs Bama/FL border shown by most of the 18z guidance... I’m still not ruling out 95L gets left behind due to weak steering in Caribbean for next 3-5 days if reforms keep happening S...

Many tropical depressions start with a broad circulation. The origins of this system is pure tropical.

PTC/TD designation has nothing to do with origins and everything to do with whether or not it actually meets the criteria of a tropical cyclone yet (closed low-level circulation, deep convection, etc).

Of course, that can still be a somewhat subjective determination.
