Does anyone have any remedies for insomnia?

I had insomnia last night. Guess what I did - baked two apple pies. Most of the time when it happens to me - I get up and do something - to get my mind off no being able to sleep. I hate tossing and turning.
Mostly this happens to me when I am under alot of stress and who says accountant's don't have stress LOL.
Just my two cents - for what works for me....

PLEASE be very very very careful with tylenol! PLEASE! My mother in law died from an accidental over dose on tylenol- and I almost lost an officemate who had been taking 2 every night for 6 months to make herself sleep- the toxicity levels in her blood were enough to send her doctor into shock and tell her to STOP whatever it was that she was doing immediatly. PLEASE consider using something else to help you sleep. Tylenol has a tendancy to build up in your system if over used and you'd be amazed at the number of things that have tylenol in them. The only warning signs of a tylenol overdose are usually passed off as just not feeling well because they are so mild- by the time you start feeling those symptoms it's a 6-12 hour clock counting down from which your liver may never recover. Once you become very ill... there's usually little hope.
That being said- I lay very still in bed and concentrate on relaxing everything starting at my forehead and ending with my toes slowly. Deep slow breaths in and out help. Consider not reading before bed if you can't finish the book (this bothers some people). If I'm feeling very restless I will have a glass of wine and listen to soothing classical music for a while befor eI try to go to bed- I get very sleepy when tipsy
and it only takes a glass of wine for that.
Find activities that will leave your mind settled and peaceful before bed- never balance the checkbook or start chores that you cannot finish. If your living with someone consider asking for a massage before you go to bed
It brings you closer together and relaxes at the same time.
Consider watching a sunset or sitting out under the stars and watching the sky. Do something that slows you down mentally- I can never sleep when my mind is raching around

Let me explain the Tylenol PM. I do not react well to prescription pain pills. I just can't take them at all. I broke both arms recently and if any of you have ever done this you will know pain medicine is a must. My doc recommended the Tylenol PM at night for pain when it was keeping me awake. It worked. I do not take it anymore. And it is not just Tylenol you can overdose on. A friend of mine had a brain tumor when she was 14. She took Tylenol for headaches. When she was finally diagnosed he told her had she taken an aspirin it would have killed her in 90 seconds. People overdose on prescription drugs EVERYDAY! Not over the counter drugs.
By no means did I mean for it to be used as a sleep aid. Sorry sunnyday. If I had comprehended what I had read I would have agreed with Marshall.

As few as twelve Tylenol (at one time) can be a lethal dose. It causes the liver to begin failing and death comes about 3 days later, if the organ failure is not diagnosed and treated. It's certainly not dangerous if taken according to directions and if the dosage is kept to a minimum. We had a girl come in to the ER who had OD'd on Tylenol. I asked one of our physicians how it was possible and how many it would take to kill someone. That's what he told me.

No aplogies needed at all, Linda. I am VERY careful with all medicines and take only the bare minimum I need. I appreciated your suggestion but was a bit afraid to try the Tylenol PM till I checked with my doctor because I take some prescriptions meds, too.

I am also allergic to Codeine. The stuff makes me dizzy and sick to my stomach. I can't take the pain meds without it either such as Percodan and things like that. So, I have to use the Tylenol.
No apology needed OG. I am so sorry about Lisa. I did not read that either, until now. You have every right to be leery of Tylenol.
I have mended well sunnyday. I am back to normal at least as much as I was before I broke them. LOL!!

I use melatonin for the occasional sleepless night. All natural herbal formula extracted from tomatoes. I have the 1mg pill, and I cut it in half. Don't need too much, just enough to get my body back into sleep mode.
Melatonin is the natural chemical your body manufactures to let you know it is time to sleep. It is what makes you tired. Of course, I work shift work and that messes up the internal body clock, so that is why I use it. (Occasionally)

I know. Some things that work for me are:
1) Taking a hot or warm shower right before bed. This serves to relax the muscles of your body, which may be causing unnecessary tension.
2) Begin daydreaming about a certain something or someone. Progressively do it more and more until you feel sleep coming on.
3) *this may or may not work* Meditate before bed. Don't jump straight from your computer into bed like I do (which is my problem that I need to work on). Give your brain time to shut down and relax before getting into sleep mode.

I always jump straight from my computer into bed... I fall asleep when I am going to fall asleep anyway.
