Rick Mitchell was doing a decade recap earlier and the snow part(about 2010) went "this was back when it used to snow" starting to sound like some of us...

Hi guys. Its frustrating. I understand. This west based niño is giving off more of a niña atmosphere currently. Alutian ridging and -pna isnt nino imo. Also a super strong pv. Lots of things not going in our favor. I think we should have a backloaded winter though. Those are my opinions, but i want a more exciting pattern and better chances of cold and snow.

I love wintertime, snowy weather, and cold temperatures as much as anyone I suppose. And given some of my health issues and being 54 years old now, I sometimes wonder just how many more times I’ll actually get to see a good snow or have a real chance at a White Christmas (I’m thankful to have seen my only two in 2009 and 2012).

But as much as I love winter weather, the reality is that we live in Texas. It just doesn’t snow or get extremely cold here very often. If you doubt that, take a look at this: https://www.iweathernet.com/dfw-weather-records/monthly-snowfall-records-for-dfw-since-1898

We all need to temper our expectations just a little bit. Snow years here in Texas often seem to come in spurts, as do stretches without snow. Eventually, we’ll see snow again and get the last laugh on Heat Miser. In the meantime, enjoy every day you’ve got along with the weather that comes our way. As long as it’s not tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, or wildfires, it’s all good. :D

Since many are so despondent here, watch this video. Looks like we could have a late arriving winter.

Latest Euro Weeklies are pretty stagnant, not much change in the overall pattern through January.

Late arriving winter to me usually means it's east based. Analog years similar to this one had a brutal Feb for the east. Starting to realize it's impossible to predict the MJO long term. Last year was a major fail too.

Something to add. I've had alot fo free time over the holidays. I have been looking at different arctic motherload high pressures and the dynamics leading up to it began multiple weeks before hand. Even the smallest block in the arctic can lead to mayhem.

Happy New Year :37: :bd:

Unless something crazy happens before midnight, December 2019 will close out +2.7-3.0 on the monthly mean, and we are well below the average precip @ -1.34"

So what's next?

Mid January thru Mid March may end up being our winter wx window. If a late winter sets up, I wonder how it could effect our severe weather outlook starting in late March?

This could be setting the stage for a very cold 2nd half of January.

That's what the guy on the video was saying. We are stepping down gradually.

Happy New Year to all the weather nuts on Storm2k!!!! Before the Shiners and tequila start to cloud my brain, I just wanted to say January and February will be rockin in 2020. Cold and snow are on the way. Maybe my brain is clouded already.

Have you been drinking :ggreen: Though I hope you're right. I'm headed to Lake Tahoe Sunday Night and hopefully there will at least be a little snow before I leave on Friday. Worst case I'm going up to the ski resort

Gorgeous. It’s coming! I’d probably head to Montana that weekend. Love me some -20 and skiing!

I have a friend with a condo on Tahoe. He was there last week and there was plenty of snow based on his picture on FB. Enjoy! :froze: :cold:

That's good the models have been not bullish on the snow next week is why I've been a little concerned but the 12z Euro has 3 inches now lol but not til day 8 of course I had been watching the EPS cut down on snow for several runs up til today

Wow -45F in Southern Canada in the long-range GFS spilling over the border. This is the coldest run I recall seeing this winter so far. Maybe just maybe we are seeing the beginning of a pattern change for North America showing up in the mid Jan timeframe which could bring arctic cold down into a Texas as others have noted?

The alutian ridge is more nina than niño. I still believe we have too much troughing out west. It would be good if we had a -nao to counteract the alutian ridge, but right now we don't. Imo, we still got a ways to go.

-15 a couple nights ago with a foot of snow on the ground after a few inches have melted off here at the cabin in Westcliffe. I’m going to work hard to bring it back to Texas.
