Will they retire Isabel?

#1 Postby george_r_1961 » Fri Oct 24, 2003 1:50 pm

I think Isabel should be retired due to her $1 billion price tag.
Cleaunup here in VA is still underway 5 weeks after the storm, and the rebuilding effort on the Outer Banks of NC will take months if not longer.

Sort of like asking if Roger Clemens will go into the Hall of Fame :-)

Of course it will be retired. No brainer.

Maryland alone is at FIVE Billion in damage and rising; I believe Isabel has pased Hugo to move into second place in hurricane dollar damage.

agree...we will never again have to deal with hurricane isabel. BTW, Delaware got a disaster declaration from TS Henri. Hard to believe but when the remnants went ashore sunday sept. 14 parts of N delaware and SE PA got 12 inches of rain in a six hour period causing flood heights of record. The presidential disaster declaration officially called it "TS Henri (remnants)"

Yep, Isabel shall leave the 6-year cycle for good.

Goodbye Isabel, hello Ivory. (OK, that's just a guess, but still....)

Isabel-definitely.

Fabian-most likely.

Juan-maybe, since the Canadian weather bureau requested it.

When there is another "I" named storm needed. Isabel will move up the "retired list" and be used again.

If names don't come back ever again, they will run out.

They will never run out of hurricane names lol.. They need to have more imagination with some of these names.. and yes I think Isabel will be retired, I also think Fabian will and maybe even Ana for her incredibly early formation.

I don't think Ana will be retired as storms that are retired are the consequence of highly damaging or deadly impacts.

Fabian or Juan Maybe! But we shouldn't be quick to retire names. Andrew yes.....Mitch yes....Camille yes. The ones this year don't hold a candle to these. These storms caused catastrophic; Mitch killed nearly 13,000 initially; thousands tohers from disease and starvation. No comparison to this years storms.

What about Isabel? There's a chance Isabel could beat out Hugo for damage in the United States, and only one hurricane in U.S. history has caused more damage than Hugo besides Isabel. Damage is AT LEAST, if I am correct, $5 billion, likely more. Hugo was $7 billion.

Juan ... maybe, and quite possible ... just because a request was submitted by Environment Canada, doesn't mean it will be retired. However with that said, it WAS the worst storm to hit Halifax in a very long time and the damage was quite heavy. Quite a debate for the WMO.

Fabian ... I think it's a sure lock ... The NE eyewall slammed Bermuda ... although the death toll was relatively low and the damage figures aren't staggering by any stretch of imagination. The residents of Bermuda who lived through this storm will IMHO never forget Fabian of 2003. Fabian gets my vote for retirement.

And to top it all off, Hurricane Fabian was a large 120 mph category 3 when the right-front quadrent went over it.

FABIAN did a lot of damage to Bermuda. Some parts of the island are probably still cleaning up. Fabian should be retired.
