A possible mesovortex within Typhoon Tapah over the East China Sea on the afternoon of September 21, as captured by a passenger aboard an airplane flying from Japan to Taiwan during that time! This was verified by the HongKong Observatory(HKO).

Out of curiosity, why have these satellite floaters not been available for the Atlantic for some time? Would have liked to analyze Michael and Dorian using these AVN and RBTOP IR products.

Honestly i just come and go. I have always wondered about that too. I can share my expertise but am too busy to keep up with the weather. I read that they switch to a new satellite this year?
Maybe someone who devouts more time can help you.

They say this is photoshopped.
Civilian planes cannot fly up that high!

It's not the entire typhoon, but a mesovortex... it's possible you could see them from a commercial flight. In fact, an administrator of a weather group I help manage on Facebook messaged the HKO about this, and he got this reply:
"Thanks a lot for your comment.
From the zoom-in satellite imagery attached below (21/9 0640UTC, source: Himawari-8 of JMA), multiple mesovortices, or circulation of low-level clouds, could be seen near the centre of the storm. We have checked the flight path data, time which the photo was taken, and compared against the satellite imagery. It is very likely that the lower clouds circulations in the photos correspond to the mesovortices marked on the second (rotated) imagery attached.
It was not our intention to indicate the centre of circulation of the lower clouds nearer to the camera to be the “centre of the entire storm”. Instead, it was meant to be one of the vortices near the storm centre. We do share your views that it is normally not possible to see the entire tropical cyclone from commercial flight altitude. We are preparing an article to discuss the analysis in more detail. Thanks again for your comment."

Re: WPAC: TAPAH - Post-Tropical
I didn't know passenger jets flew right though tropical cyclones! I guess I'd always assumed they stayed far away and went around them.

I am not a meteorologist, and any posts made by me are not official forecasts or to be interpreted as being intelligent. These posts are just my opinions and are probably silly opinions.
Re: WPAC: TAPAH - Post-Tropical
Yeah interesting. Might as well have dropsondes equipped on these passenger jets for future purposes.
