Had it not been for large and slow-moving Hurricane Emily that pushed the subtropical high to the east where it remained, the 1981 hurricane season would have been disasterous for the US EC, with four CV hurricanes following Emily - all recurving into the trough:

Interesting how four of those Cape Verde storms had names that are now retired: Floyd, Harvey and Irene.

When you plot the September 1981 mid-level height anomalies, the troughing over the Eastern US sticks out like a sore thumb.
