Do you really add the forward speed to the wind speeds?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Do you really add the forward speed to the wind speeds?

#1 Postby rob8303 » Sun Oct 19, 2003 6:36 pm

I was reading a transcript on cnn.com from Hurricane Isabel from what their met, Chad Myers said. He said that on the east side of the storm you have to add the forward speed to the wind speeds to get the combined total. So Isabel was moving at what 15 when it hit land with 100 mph winds. So why was the strongest gust only 105. If this wnd speed=forward motion theory was true, shouldn't the gusts have been 115? If not, why not and how does that fit into the theory?

No, you DO NOT add forward speed on. The max sustained wind given by the NHC already takes forward speed into account.

Now I'm confused because I've heard other Mets say that you add the forward speed to the stated maximum sustained winds to the right of track and subtract to the left of track. :o I've heard Orland Sidney and Valerie Voss (both CNN Meteorologists) state this on different occasions. Hmmm...this doesn't look so good for CNN's Mets. LOL

This is correct.

The fact of the matter is that the forward speed of the hurricane and the maximum sustained winds are already factored by the NHC in their advisories so this makes this true. Obviously, OtherHD nailed this one on the head and I'll start the joke that CNN seems quite misinformed regarding this. (But then again I guess it fits the CNN theme ... LOL)

When CNN first aired in the '80s there was a guy named Nick Gregory who was also pretty good. He once came to Barbados and did a guest presentation of the weather on our T.V station. But you're right, tropicana, Val Voss was the best.

You know, I can remember fairly well when CNN started up. Let's see, there was Ralph Wenge, Pat Harvey (a real knockout!), Nick Gregory and that guy with a British accent that used to deal with financial matters...(what's his name again?...)

Oh well, maybe I don't recall those early days as well as I think but their theme song for Daybreak back then was (IMHO) the best.

Flip Spiceland is still in Atlanta, but on the NBC affiliate... WXIA-TV 11 (11 Alive).

Karen McGinnis is also [still] in Atlanta... on FOX5 (WAGA-TV).

Thank you for the info ColdFront. I'm glad that Flip and Karen haven't gone very far.
Anyone know what ever happen to Valerie Voss ?

You're welcome tropicana.

I couldn't find any information about Valerie Voss when I found the information on Flip Spiceland (which I knew about from previous searches) and Karen McGinnis.

I am not positive if Flip Spiceland and Karen McGinnis were no longer on CNN before mid to late 2001, but I do know that most of CNN's reporters and anchors were fired in September 2001, on and around Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

Lou Waters, Natalie Allen, Gene Randall, Frank Sesno are among those that were let go in September 2001.
