Running tally of most active years in the Tropical Atlantic

#1 Postby Stormsfury » Wed Oct 15, 2003 11:54 am

With Nicklaus's inception currently we're at 14 Tropical Cyclones for the Atlantic Season.

The AOML reanalysis of 1851-1910 has provided some startling data. (Currently, the 1910's-1930's are being reanalyzed)

1933 - 21
1995 - 19
1887 - 19 (Up 2 from 17)
1969 - 18
1936 - 16
2000 - 15
2001 - 15

2003 - 14 (which ties 1916, 1953, 1990, 1998)

The complete listing by year of the no. of TS's, Hurricanes, and Majors.

Interesting that FIVE of the top twelve most active years on that list have been in the last decade. Hasn't Bill Gray been saying for a few years now that we're entering an extended period of more active seasons?

BINGO! We have a winner!

Thanks, Mike and definitely Dr. Gray has been on the money about the increased activity. Dr. Gray also mentioned that fact that the cycle MAY last for 2 or 3 decades before returning to a lesser period of tropical cyclone activity in the ATL.
