Yes Mike.. Wow cool stuff. :o I won't ever forget that Storm. I have a question..why didn't we have any warning?? In Florida :?: Thanks

Actually, the storm was known about and talked about well ahead in advance and all the globals saw this as being a huge powerhouse. However, no one realized for the potential of a storm surge and windmaker that the Superstorm would be that far in the Gulf. The Superstorm bombed explosively from a baroclinc leaf ... this was due to phasing (triple phaser) from the subtropical, polar, and arctic jet streams.

Huge storm and huge windmaker. Pressure bombed out to 960 mb at Chesapeake Bay.

For me,in my exact location(south tip of Guadeloupe),it was CLEO in 1964,a cat 3+at that time(the eye passed directly over this part of the island, with 110kts in sustained wind)
It was also DAVID,INEZ,and HUGO,but i was somewhat away of their eyewalls(30kms to the north,or to the south)
In terms of rain,it was MARILYNwith some 500mm in 18hours!!!!

My storm wasnt a hurricane, it was a tornado (It had to have been...). Weathermen said it was a microburst, but I have reasons to believe why it was not...

1. The trees where blowing (some had their tips touching the ground, but none fell..these were pine trees) in different directions. One minute they were blowing east, next they were blowing west, and so on. Microbursts have straightline winds, this wasnt a straighline wind.

2. The pressure dropped, you could feel it. I dont know how deep it dropped to though, probably not much.

3. The door in my house was being sucked out (It was impossible to open it). Also, when we opened the windows you can feel the air rushing out.

It was easily the scariest moment of my life (I havnt been through a powerful hurricane). I would estimate the winds were up above 100 (just comparing to hurricane videos).

The worst storm I've been through? That would definitely be Hurricane Frederic. I'll grant that we've had brushes by several other nasty storms (e.g. Opal, Elena) and Danny was a horrible rainmaker (or, rather, flood-maker). But Frederic was the worst.

And I remember that no name storm in 93. We had ice and snow all the way down here on the Gulf Coast! It made a mess of the outside birthday party we'd planned for my brother-in-law.

I don't get hurricanes here in Michigan, but I definitely get blizzards and ice storms. The worst storm for me hit in April of 2003...a VICIOUS ice storm left Grand Rapids and many nearby areas without power for a whole two days, longest I've ever been without power. Most damage I've ever seen in person from one storm. Also, there was lightning with it, which also contributed to the power outage....it was NOT fun!

Worst I've ever been through would have to be Alicia in 1983 because a tornado came right through my yard and we were without power for 7 days. BY FAR THE WORST AFTERMATH and DEFINITELY the second worst Hurricane I've been through would be Camille in 1969!! The only reason Camille is second worse is I was 120 miles from the eye. We still had winds as strong as in Alicia and an 8'stormsurge in our area!!

We don't name our storms over here ;)

But I've experienced several whilst out in the Scottish Highlands with winds gusting well in excess of 70mph - including one whilst I was camped alone out in the wilds in February 1989 which flattened my tent and dropped several inches of rain on me overnight. That was certainly my worst storm, even if it wasn't the strongest!

That certainly sounds nasty!!! Yuck!!! Was this in the Northern Dumfireshire region? I've traced my family to this area.

Storm of the Centry ...1993: lost 8 trees, no power for a week, froze out my fish tank, no actual damage to the house

Donna ...1960 ( I was very young) : Knocked down the entire racquet ball court next door, tree through the back part of our house, flooding ( enough to use a small boat to float down the street), lost the tool shed

David... Flooded the rear room ( 8-10 inches).

Hugo ... I was on vaction in NC ... camping !!! Spent the storm in a shelter. .. taught me to start watching the weather

Opal and Floyd.. found myself on the outskirts of each... I REALLY need to plan my vacations better.

Ffor hurricanes, hurricane Fran was the worst I have been through.

For stroms, the Ice Storm of 1998 was far worse....we had no power for a week, but some places were out of power for a month. All of the schools were closed down and made into emergency shelters, five counties including mine were declared a disaster area; even the national guard was sent here. It's something that I will never forget.

It was nasty - I was lucky it was very mild. If it had been cold as well I might not be here now :(

It was further north from Dumfries-shire, right up in the West Highlands to the NW of Fort William.

Storm of the Century

#39 Postby stormchazer » Mon Oct 13, 2003 8:47 am

Yes Mike.. Wow cool stuff. I won't ever forget that Storm. I have a question..why didn't we have any warning?? In Florida Thanks

I was living in Florida and can recall the day before this storm. I have a Marine Forecasting Book that discusses what it calls rapidly developing Low Pressure systems. This appears to be what occured here but they are not known to occur in the GoM except in the case of Tropical development and during the summer months. I think the warning was poor because it developed and deepened faster then even forecasters thought it would.

The posts or stuff said are NOT an official forecast and my opinion alone. Please look to the NHC and NWS for official forecasts and products.

Model Runs Cheat Sheet:
GFS (5:30 AM/PM, 11:30 AM/PM)
HWRF, GFDL, UKMET, NAVGEM (6:30-8:00 AM/PM, 12:30-2:00 AM/PM)
ECMWF (1:45 AM/PM)
TCVN is a weighted averaged

Opinions my own.

I was on the "good-side" of the Superstorm. Man I wish I would have been older so I could remember it better. We had roughly 16-18" here, and large drifts on the sides of houses, like nothing I've ever seen.

But as for the worst storm I've been through, hands down Hurricane Opal. I don't remember how long the power was out, but we lost a couple trees, my neighbor lost 4 huge oak trees, multiple pines were down, it was a mess. I'd estimate winds were in the 60 range with gusts over 80.
