So far Puerto Rico has not been hammered by wave/TD

#1 Postby cycloneye » Fri Oct 10, 2003 6:14 am

It was feared by many here in Puerto Rico that we would get tons of rain from this developing system but the very heavy rains haved stayed offshore the south coast of the island. As the low pressure is developing the area of heavy showers is consolidating around the low just SW of Cabo Rojo in the SW corner of the island.Overnight rain amounts were between 1 and 2 inches in portions of the island especially in the SE,south and SW parts of the island. But localized amounts higher than those may haved fallen in pockets but in general Puerto Rico has not seen the massive floodings that yesterday was feared.

Now let's see how things go during the rest of this friday in terms of rainfall as the system is developing because we may have more rain for SW,west, south of PR so hopefully no floods or mudslides happen today.

Luis, better sit tight there. I think you're going to get a lot more rain today. Thunderstorms have been organizing to your SSE on latest satellite loops, and they are heading north around the broad circulation. If the circulation tightens up and the low moves off to the WNW or NW you should begin to clear. But right now it is moving slowly, so rain amounts could increase in areas that are getting rain. Good day to go back to bed if you can!!

Luis - glad to know that you have not received too much rain yet. Hopefully, there will be no serious flooding during the upcoming day.

Take care PR as it does look like it maybe worse today. The developing circulation is gaining ground to the north and west. Yesterday this area was the least develop as there appeared to still be interaction with the trough to the north. Take care!

The posts or stuff said are NOT an official forecast and my opinion alone. Please look to the NHC and NWS for official forecasts and products.

Model Runs Cheat Sheet:

HWRF, GFDL, UKMET, NAVGEM (6:30-8:00 AM/PM, 12:30-2:00 AM/PM)
ECMWF (1:45 AM/PM)
TCVN is a weighted averaged

About Puerto Rico..

#8 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Fri Oct 10, 2003 8:31 am

The wind flow is more east southeasterly, a perfect angle to the mountains of puerto rico. Thus the southern and eastern portion of that island will likely see the heaviest rainfall and the potential is there for the rain to measure in feet, not inches. In a heavy squall south of San Juan, radar estimates of over one inch an hour has occurred. But since we're talking orographic lift too from the mountains, we can easily add more to that I'm afraid.

Hopefully rainfall will be less than a foot in Puerto Rico. We can only hope for the best.

Yes...there's been just light rain since 4:00pm yesterday afternoon until now with a few strong showers over some areas of the islands. Some mudslides and flooded streets have been reported on local news but nothing serious. Our emergency management agencies have been on alert since yesterday and will continue for the rest of the day until this is over. Rainfall has increased right now over my area as a result of a strong area of thunderstorms that moved inland inside the big area of convection that is over PR since yesterday. I think that we'll be OK for the rest of the day and the rain will diminish by the evening as the wave move away from us.

Thank's for all your support on our situation!
