I agree. It is a setup that can potentially be fun, but can also end up only being flurries if you don’t get lucky. While I’m looking forward to the storm tomorrow, it’s hard to get hopes up or be overly excited

I think a good reason for why there seems to be not as many DFW people as one would expect with snow potentially less than a day out is that we have been continuously let down with a lot of these systems over the past 3 years. Since the winter of 2014-2015, I think (please correct if i'm wrong I didn't really get into weather until last year) there's only been 1 instance of measurable snow in the DFW area, which was last January. These models show snow and then it's a no go, so it just kinda blows ya know? So, I feel like there's higher skepticism now than usual just because it's been disappointing seeing everywhere from the sahara desert to Tallahassee receiving more snow than us up here, and we just don't want to get our hopes up to be let down again. At least, that's sort of how I feel.

Many of the forecasts I’m seeing for the middle of next week have temps 10-20 degrees warmer for highs than what the GFS has, but that’s nothing new for 5-7 days out.

Just going to throw this out there but if there is measurable snow tomorrow, it would be a rare chance to experience brief blizzard-like conditions. It wouldn’t meet the time requirement but 30 minutes of snow in high winds would be nice. That wind is going to be howling. Christmas Eve 2009 is the only time where it was close that I can recall.

Incidentally I’m in Jonesboro and trying to get out tomorrow before it’s here. WS Watch currently.

Interesting, b/w the bands of snow it shows sleet, so the QPF field is a bit more smoothed out than what it is showing for snow.

Wow, according to this, 2'' of snow IMBY. I'll let y'all know tomorrow if this pans out haha

I think this every winter season. Some winters are good, some are bad, it is all relative, all according to where one lives. Living in DFW we should never get accustomed to any type of winter and just be lucky if anything happens at all. Yeah, it sucks when a modeled storm does not come into fruition, but this is the nature of our environment. Roughly 80% bad, 20% good. And it is annoying to see Tallahassee and North Africa for Pete's sake to get accumulating snow before we do. I drool at the prospect of snow any chance we get, that is what makes winter in Texas so much fun. It certainly gets frustrating at times not seeing anything as we watch other areas of the nation get plenty. It is a large country with more weather changing patterns, topography, severe tornadoes, hurricanes than any other nation on earth. Typing is hard with a bottle and a half of Merlot running through the blood stream. Hope it makes sense.

I definitely agree. Texas winters are undoubtedly the best winters imo because we can have all sorts of things and it's fun to watch the craziness of everything. I definitely am disappointed about our winter luck recently but I'm confident we'll get something when the time is right! ;)

I honestly do NOT get the fascination with snow. Personally, I would rather NEVER see it again.

Dry snow is awesome! Wet snow is ok( but you take what you can get, especially in the south). Sleet and freezing rain are horrid, when the ground is covered in ice each step feels like it might be your last one lol.

As I was typing this I got a weather alert, looks like WWA have gone up for west plex. There's a war between the global models and the mesoscale models for me. The global models are progressive and would be a WWA event for me, almost every mesoscale model is amped though, would be a big time storm lol. NWS is leaning on the global models, which is probably right since this is Ohio and not the East Coast.

I'm glad to see DFW get the chance to see snow though. Winter looks so much better when the ground is white! :D

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Fort Worth TX
327 AM CST Thu Jan 11 2018

.SHORT TERM...
/Today and Tonight/

An upper trough moving east into the Plains will be the primary
weather concern across North Texas for the next 24 hours. A strong
shortwave embedded within the main trough can be seen on the
latest satellite loop lifting northeast across Oklahoma and
Kansas. This feature will help push a strong cold front south
across the Red River this morning and through the rest of the
forecast area during the day. A modified arctic airmass will surge
south through the region behind the boundary, meaning rapidly
falling temperatures can be expected with the passage of the
front. High temperatures will occur this morning for areas north
of I-20, with temperatures falling into the lower and mid 30s
early to mid afternoon. South of I-20, highs will occur early
afternoon, with temps falling into the 30s late afternoon and
early this evening.

Strong pressure rises behind the front will lead to windy
conditions, with post-frontal wind speeds sustained in the 20 to
30 MPH range, and gusting to 40 MPH. The wind advisory which was
issued yesterday will remain in place through this evening. We
have extended the advisory to include all counties of North and
Central Texas.

The axis of the upper level trough will pass overhead this
afternoon immediately behind the cold front. Most of the moisture
and lift associated with the system will remain east of the
forecast area, and any thunderstorms should in turn remain to our
east. However, an area of lift in the vicinity of the upper
trough axis should be enough to produce precipitation as it moves
from west to east across the region. A cold column of air will
exist in and near the upper trough axis, which when combined with
the cold surface layer, will result in precipitation likely being
in the form of snow. So, the current thinking is that areas that
receive precipitation, particularly northwest of a line from Paris
to Hillsboro to Eastland, may initially see light rain, but it
should change over to sleet or snow as temperatures fall during
the afternoon hours.

The GFS along with several of the most recent hi-resolution
models indicate a good signal for a convective snow band to
develop across the northwestern counties late this morning, and
move east across the northern half of the forecast area along with
the upper trough this afternoon. This would potentially lead to a
brief round of moderate to heavy snow this afternoon. The area of
concern is from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex north to the Red
River, with the highest potential of accumulating snow being from
the Denton-Decatur areas north to the Gainesville-Bowie areas.
A decision has been made to go ahead with a Winter Weather
Advisory for these areas for the 2 PM to 8 PM timeframe. Due to
the strong winds, accumulations may be difficult to come by, but
half-inch to one-inch amounts look possible in the advisory area,
with isolated one to two inch amounts not out of the question.

Precipitation will come to a fast end this evening as subsidence
spreads in on the back side of the upper trough. A cold night is
in store area-wide tonight with lows in the 20s for just about
all locations within the forecast area.

Being Canadian, I agree, I do not like snow. But I guess since it's a nuisance here but more of a novel thing in Texas, I do understand the fascination. It does look nice.

I like it. My weather loving daughter has a half day at school today and can not wait to track the snow later. Poor thing is craving a snowfall. And so is my daughter. :cheesy:

Anyone concerned that the storm has disappeared for the most part on 06z models and doesn’t appear on the HRRR?

Front is starting to come through. Extremely windy. Forecast calls for gusts at 50-55.
