This is an excellent stream. Amazing that they're still broadcasting.
The 2017 season, as terrible as it has been, is also the first real chance to show the power of live-streaming on such a wide scale in natural disasters. This technology simply didn't exist the last time the Atlantic had a hyperactive landfall season.

No way. This was at least a category four storm at landfall. Radar velocities prior to landfall showed that as well. It looks like the core is weakening relatively quickly due to land interaction. This storm is still incredibly dangerous.
Radar velocities > Recon??
Strongest winds were already over PR by the time recon reached Maria. Recon can't fly over land, and the strongest winds were confined to a small area. Also agree this was a Cat 4 based on radar, IMO.
Thank you for the explanation. I was not sure how much strengthening had occurred between the two passes. Recon got right into the NE eyewall shortly before landfall it seems like. Must have been some deepening between then and landfall.

I don't, I couldn't find that info on the stream.
And just as I say it's amazing they're still broadcasting, the signal seems to have been lost.

Slightly off topic, but why can't recon go over land and only sea?

Tolakram has spoken on the topic, heed what he says.
A friendly reminder to everyone that we are in so-called "Storm Mode" this morning and everyone needs to makes posts accordingly, things that are on topic and not inflammatory.
Tensions are high for many with a severe tropical cyclone making landfall in a tremendously populated area. Some here have family members in harms way and we have board members in the region.
So be on your best behavior.
Simply looked at recon data from when it was still off shore, saw SFMR maxing out in the cat 3 range, saw radar presentation degrading slightly, and commented on what I saw. Idk what I did wrong.
Fair question, so I'll respond here. First, NHC had official landfall as a high end Cat 4 with winds of 155 mph. That's the official call at the moment from the official agency with the best information, weather data, and forecasting tools that anyone has at their disposal. Perhaps they go back and reexamine landfall at a later date and come up with different numbers, but that's later, not today. When in doubt about this, see Rule #12.
Second, initially, none of the above ideas were stated to substantiate the claim that this was Cat 3 versus NHC's high-end Cat 4.
And third, for some this morning, this is merely an exercise in sitting at a computer screen watching the weather unfold. But for some of our members, Maria is something far more ominous than that. They either live in the region or have family in the region. Posts that produce inflammatory responses are responded too quickly (see Tolakram's quick response).
Ok, back to regular programming.

I have a close friend in San Juan giving me updates. Will post videos when she sends them to me.

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
from what I have seen, this was without a doubt a category 4 at landfall. Flight level winds were as high as when it was a cat 5. This was right on the border of cat 4/5 based upon Doppler velocities. I'd use those over recon as the Doppler can cover a far larger area than the aircraft
It has likely weakened to about 140 mph now based upon satellite imagery. The eye is warming. The mountains of PR should lead to some weakening. Unfortunately, they are going to cause epic flash flooding and mudslides
