Irma's mid-level center (seen on radar) has completely decoupled from the low-level center and is accelerating NNE. Low-level center is lagging about 60-70 miles behind.

Woke up to quite a bit more damage than we were expecting. Looks like Matthew type damage in New Smyrna. Neighbor across the street has multiple large branches from huge old oak trees down, fence down, Palm tree snapped at the top, street sign bent over, etc their backyard looks like a lake. Our yard has some big gum tree branches down, a few inches of standing water and a bunch of debris

Still going to be up to a week before people get there power back in Tampa bay, but we sure got lucky betting against the euro..

First light and it appears to quite a bit of damage. Flipped a darn semi trailer that was part across the street used for I4 construction. Quite a few trees down. Just at first glance. Charging my phone in the car and will post some pics later.

GOES16 WV show the dry air sweeping into South Florida. All the deep moisture is venting away from the system to the north. Irma is dying, and I couldn't be happier. WV loop: https://weather.us/satellite/800-w-320-n/satellite-water-vapor-superhd-5min.html#play

I have relatives in Apopka, just a few miles northwest of there. So, I'm guessing they experienced similar conditions.

Orange County Mayor at press conference this morning says that they estimate damage in the city to be greater than Charley,
IMO, is probably on the much larger extension of damage versus the kind of damage being that Irma covered a larger area.

St Maarten has been hard hit by Irma.
the link below shows
considerable damage and flooding from Irma in Marigot on the French side..
https://www.rci.fm/infos/societe/les-ra ... -et-photos

I live on the Dutch side which has also had catastrophic damage
The island took a direct hit.

I do not have statistics as to the highest wind recorded as the Meteorological office has not issued a report.

I can tell you that we live in a very strong house and it felt like my house was going to explode. We definitely experienced the eye of Irma and very intense winds before and after the eye passed over us. We have every reason to believe we experienced the full force of a Cat 5 hurricane.

We suffered lot of damage but did not lose our roof.

Many people did lose roofs and we are hearing reports of many businesses being totally destroyed.

We also know there has been substantial looting.

Philipsburg the capital of the Dutch side has many businesses along the boardwalk that were demolished due to storm surge.

There was substantial flooding on both the Dutch side and the French side.

Currently the island has no power, no water, no cell phone service, and limited internet. Broadcast stations are off the air
There are Dutch Marines and French military on the island providing assistance.

This has been a heavy blow for St Maarten, but we will bounce back, as we have done before.

Thinking of our sister islands who are also experiencing the wrath of Irma.

Barbara, we're getting reports in our local news this morning that it's virtually a civil war situation on the island, with armed gangs roaming the streets and invading homes, killing and stealing at will. I don't know if they're exaggerating, but it really sounds quite grim. Praying for your safety.

I agree that this is no longer tropical. Although at this point, the large wind radii probably creates worse impacts compared to the typical decaying TS.

As a side note, this storm serves as a good reminder how vulnerable South FL is to intense hurricanes. Even with the center moving ashore near Marco Island, there was a storm surge of a couple feet in Miami. Furthermore, if the south side of Irma's core wasn't so eroded, storm surge on the west coast of FL would have been much worse. For as bad as Irma was in FL, I'm thankful that the worst-case scenarios did not verify. Unfortunately, I don't think many other places in the Caribbean can say the same. My prayers go out to all those affected by the storm.
