Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
Family and Friends in Orlando all have checked in as okay, but no power. Friends in Tampa pulled a 2 am last minute Evacuation, made it to Gainesville, and are crashing with other friends, safe and sound. So far no major damages reported among mine, and I'm up in mid GA just waiting for the power outages to begin. I hope everyone else is as fortunate as my family has been through this storm. Also, can we all take a moment and sincerely hope the UKMET is off for Jose?

Power went on and off at least a dozen times here, since late last evening it went off for good! Winds still whipping some out there in NE Palm Beach County, along with live oaks having their foliage stripped off a good bit. I'd say this was a weaker version of Hurricane Frances, maybe Jeanne, but Wilma surely packed a punch even as just a Cat.2 here back in 2005.

The dry southern side of Irma is crazy more windy, wow! I was not expecting that!

Yes, I measured 88 mph . I live only about 3 miles from the NWS office at Jax International Airport. This is a heck of a rain and moving through the my area.

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
I have just lost my power.
Well, before I check out here, I saw on TV there is major flooding out at Jax Beach, and along the St. Johns River in the downtown area. Thre is a significant storm surge apparently in the river.
Many people out of power there are over 200, 000 residents currently without power in Jacksonville/Duval County.
Rainfall , when I was able to check my gauge, about 2 hours ago, already was at 11 inches total since Saturday evening.
It will be awhile before I can be able to check in as my power is out.

So the models were right of 80-90 mph wind gusts for your area, sorry they verified.

One model note: Euro has egg on its face. It mostly did well with #IRMA but crapped out with FL landfall. Glad I went with my gut on this.

Upper level outflow and dynamics associated with the jet streak to Irma's north are now dominating the system as the inner core evaporates approaching Jacksonville. Amazing to watch. Loop: https://weather.us/satellite/800-w-320-n/top-alert-superhd-15min.html#play

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
Irma doesn't look tropical any longer. Its core is gone and it appears to have merged with the cold front. This makes it a much larger storm than it was at landfall, but without the intense core winds. Giant tropical storm.

Getting shocking straight line winds, hours after they calmed down a little!

Lots of Cat 1 like damage in central Florida...many roads flooded or blocked by trees.

Models are just that - models. Not perfect. Always go with your gut - after analyzing the data, of course.

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
Haven't seen any sustained wind reports of over 45 kts in recent hours, but Irma could still have some 50kt sustained winds along the Atlantic coast this morning. Definitely no longer tropical. Temps in the 50s in southern Georgia now. Irma has merged with the front. Tropical storm-force winds extend out nearly 400 miles to the northeast, which is typical for extratropical storms. No core left, so no stronger winds near the center. It would be causing less wind damage if it had stayed tropical. Now it's going to take a lot longer for the winds to wind down.

STILL pretty windy here even tho the eye passed us by at 10 last night. Irma is not going quietly.
