Texas Summer 2017

It's pouring here in northern Rockwall county. I think this is 4th or 5th day in a row we've gotten rain. Not complaining one bit.

Tonight was a surprise for sure, wasn't expecting anything like that! We got hammered after a really nice shelf cloud pushed through.

DFW airport has been unlucky today. All afternoon and evening the storms ignited and rained out. Just about most around got some but the airport managed only a few sprinkles measuring a few hundredths of an inch.

Yea that's true, I live about 2 miles east of the recharge zone.

Yeah, my parents in SA live a few blocks (literally) SE of the recharge zone. Their neighborhood (built in the 1970s) bisects it. We went to the SA Zoo and Breckenridge Park, and Voelcker Park this past weekend. The native fauna in the parks look thirsty and stressed, even compared to the Austin area. Meanwhile, flood warnings and water rescues in DFW.

Big popper just blew up overhead at Walnut Hill and Beltline in Irving. Big lighting and thunder. Loving the rain. I just hope this type pattern continues all summer long.

Looks like a vorticity maximum has formed out west, swirling around just to the southeast of San Angelo.

I was outside a few min ago and noticed in the moonlight some cumulus trying to bubble up here and there but they aren't having a successful time and are falling apart.

The 0z GFS has some 50s on the DFW meteogram out in fantasy land...



Before that has a 104 next Sunday(the only day 100+)

Next week does look more like typical July so enjoy this rain while it lasts

Looks more encouraging today per the SPC Thunderstorm Outlook in my part of the state (at 40%) in the 3 to 7pm time range. Didn't even have a 10% chance yesterday. We'll see.

Interestingly enough, both the 0z GFS and the Euro show a rare mid July "cold" front for much of the nation's midsection and Southern Plains (including Texas). Seems to be about 10 days out. I have not looked at the ensembles nor have I checked to see if this is a one-off or if both models have been showing this for a few days. Will be fun to watch.

Travis County issued a burn ban today. Burnet and Caldwell counties already had burn bans in effect. Just another sign of how shallow our moisture from spring rains was, I guess.

It has also been near 100, with breezy conditions for days/weeks on end, which doesn't help our situation either.

I miss rain in south central Texas

It makes sense that they have issued the ban. Parts of the county didn't see the past rain event either. You can tell where it has rained more by how green it is. South Austin looks pretty green as does southwest but other areas have more tans and browns. Since we are in it for the long haul, I'd expect the entire metro to become prone to the spread of fires.

I noticed the difference in vegetation health driving from San Antonio to Austin this past weekend. More tans and browns in SA, back to more lush green in San Marcos and south Austin, back to more tans and mixed greens in north Austin and the northern burbs.

Yeah, if nothing changes, just a matter of a couple weeks (if that) of heat ridge/warm breeze persistence before the greens turn dormant, and grass/brush fire risk goes up across the region.

Well we have had our rains here in SE Tx, everything is green. It is super super humid. Yesterday i think was as bad as it can get as far as temp and humidity combo. My station had 94 degrees and 78 dewpoint at one point. Didnt rain either.
