Dry air may be causing some issues now. A wedge of it can be seen coming from the north on various microwave images.
It's worth noting that Ernie is clear-cut the most intense Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone this season.

ERNIE was likely underestimated in intensity may have been the first sshs cat5 of 2017.
