Seems the 12Z GFS is colder for not only Texas but the deep south and Florida with quite a deep an penetrating arctic invasion albeit modified as it heads SE and E across the CONUS. The 00Z ECMWF is colder for Texas than the GFS but moves the cold air NE leaving most of the deep south and Florida out of the core of the cold airmass.

Long-range GFS shows yet another Arctic blast that invades the United States after this first blast in the mid December timeframe with 2M temps in the -30sF and -40sF in Southern Canada near the border of Montana and North Dakota! :cold: :double:

Seems like the last sub 20 night was with the Nuri induced mid Nov '14 Arctic outbreak.

The mean monthly temperature at DFW has been above normal for 10 out of the first 11 months of this year. For the January 1st through November 30th 2016 period, DFW is in a tie for the second warmest on record. The record warmest January through November period was in 2006. There is still the full month of December to go, so we may rise or fall on the top 10 warmest years list when we include the full year. There are no strong signals that indicate a particularly cold or warm December. The average temperature at DFW for November 2016 was 63.5 degrees which is the warmest on record. Records for DFW go back to September 1, 1898. The average fall 2016 temperature (September-October-November) at DFW was 73.0 degrees. This makes fall 2016 the warmest on record, surpassing the old warmest fall set in 1931 (72.4 degrees). The next three warmest falls were in 2007 (71.7 degrees), 2005 (71.1 degrees) and 2015 (70.9 degrees)!

Image
So far this year, DFW has received 34.88 inches of precipitation which is 1.29 inches above the normal 33.59 inches. We've had six months that were drier than normal: January, February, March, June, September and October. The other five months were wetter than normal allowing us to overcome the deficit.

With the forecast of 2.5" to 3" of total rainfall for DFW over the weekend December could equal Novembers rainfall in one weekend.

That would be run of the mill.. most of us don't want that.

As to direct discharge of cold air.. the trend last few years has been negative on that. I will believe it when model support within a few days of the event, and actual upstream temps support a direct discharge into Texas.

12Z Euro out 144 hours an already some pretty big differences between the two models on front location and strength with the GFS faster and not quite as cold.
