Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Regarding its structure, maybe a Subtropical Storm now? It doesn't appear truly frontal, but it is clearly not convective like a tropical cyclone.

Just entered the backside of the storm. Winds much higher than all day.

One thing very concerning from Haiti
No word at all from where it made landfall. Les Cayes was out of the eyewall and Jeremie is on the north part of the peninsula. No tidal surge and they had downslope flow, so mudslides not a major issue there

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
We had heavy tree damage and numerous blocked roads in Richland County, south of Columbia. Not sure when power will be returned for some areas. Matthew has certainly left his mark on inland SC.

Getting pretty solid tropical storm conditions right now. Very heavy rain sustained winds in the 30's with higher gusts.

I am tired from hurricane tracking and I live in Texas! It is amazing to see the widespread flash flood warnings and emergencies covering half of N Carolina! Not good...

Daughter just lost power in Wilmington. Winds really picking up with the backside of the storm.

Virginia beach is currently reporting 47 mph SUSTAINED winds with higher gusts. How are we not under a tropical storm warning?

I'm seeing a report tonight that US Deaths have risen to 13
http://abcnews.go.com/US/hurricane-matt ... d=42608853
I think it's 4 in Florida, 6 in Georgia and 3 in NC
Anyone have more details? I'm hoping the deaths in Georgia weren't people who refused to leave islands...

Not a tropical storm? Perhaps a gale warning is more in line. Matthew seems to be picking up speed now, I expected to be in the heavy rain until after midnight, and we're nearly on the western edge of the heavy rain.

That clearly should warrant such.

I hope the deaths were not people who might have been trying to rescue someone who refused to leave,

A High Wind Warning, which is in effect, is appropriate.

The most I can state is that the death toll for the entire nation was near 900 and continuing to rise, when I last checked. Will probably end up somewhere over 1000 if history is anything to go by.

Multiple reports of major flooding, impassable roads, and water rescues underway in eastern North Carolina. Some places will rival Floyd for flooding in the coming days as the water flows downstream. WRAL reporting 500,000 buildings without electricity in N. Carolina (not sure over what area or if that includes more than just NC).

Curfews in effect in many towns in eastern NC, including Greenville and Ayden in Pitt County. If you know of a road that frequently floods, it's probably flooded. ALL streets in 3 towns in Lenoir County reported flooded (Pink Hill, LaGrange and Deep Run.) Many streets in Goldsboro/Wayne County flooded. Tar River in Greenville has risen from 6 feet to 11 feet since this afternoon. Rivers south of here will experience Floyd like flooding. 7" of rain here so far. Wind is really picking up now. Pressure dipped to 999 for a brief time, now back at 1000.

The backside winds are far worse than the front. After a drenching, this won't be good.

Indeed, they picked up here as soon as the center was due south of us.
