We got a "break" on SBC's "Total Package", which means that we will be switching to a DSL soon...they are sending us a new modem and cell phone (Cingular, replacing our Sprint service), and they said that it may have a few glitches for about the first ten days or so after hookup.
Anyone else have this feature? If so, what should I expect? :o

Well, I didn't get a cell phone with the deal, but I already had one anyway.
But I have SBC/Yahoo DSL. Didn't work too well at first, but only because I had a static-filled landline. They told me it would be $100 for a service tech to come out and check the line. They also told me some craziness about needing to have the DSL modem at least 10 feet from the hard drive (that's bunk). I asked them to defer the billing for everything until I moved to my new place in two months (which I was already planning) and I'd just wait and hook it up at the new place. Once I got here, it was no prob.
Speaking of breaks, I got a break on a satellite dish and receiver/recorder for next to nothing for the first four months. This is awesome! Took me forever to break away from cable. Now I'm glad I did.

Well, we did this because, after we moved (with the same home page server), our 56K speed went down from an average of 45.9 to about 37.2 at best, 28.8 at worst.
Debi has tests and information she needs for her classes coming in at all times, and we can't afford unreliable service or slow speeds.

I have DSL and I run between 1.2 and 1.4 (out of a possible 1.5 megabits per second) download. I am not too sure about uploading because I never really check that. The only two problems I've had in 6 months are an e-mail server crash and a bit of lag after extended intense surfing. Other than that I'm happy with DSL. I may check cable Internet out sometime in April or May of next year after my one year runs out...

i have SBC dsl myself and it's been 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. in the beginning i had difficulty and was on the phone quite frequently. got so bad at one point, they cancelled my original service and issued new as well as sent me an additional modem (which i returned). some of the techs i have spoken to are good and others are idiots, it's all a matter of luck with regard to that. my biggest problem was getting the damn ethernet card to recognize. they told me i should swap out the modem card and replace it but i don't want to compromise the existing modem card so i run off the USB. there are two modem choices, the 2Wire Home Portal and the SpeedStream. i hope you get the 2Wire because it's much better and allows for better networking if you should need it. it also has a USB capability which although not recommended for operating in a stabile environment such as with the ethernet card, is a viable option if you can't get the damn card to work (such as i haven't). good luck with it all and pay VERY close attention to your phone bill to make sure everything is ok until the equipment is paid off. i only say that as they tried to bill me for the second modem they sent me in error which i returned. p
(found out a Windows trick tonight to tweak your existing dial up modem to go from 56K to 100+K. i'll try to get the information for anyone interested; heard about it from a tech guy who is currently staying at our hotel.)
