Moment of silence after school pledges.

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Mon Sep 22, 2003 11:13 am

Here in Texas, the state law requires us Texas students from Kindergarten to High school to observe a moment of silence after doing the school pledges. The first time we did that in late August, I was thinkin' "How come we're observing a moment of silence, no one in our school has died yet and 9/11 is only a couple of weeks away."

Do you kids in any other state besides TX have to observe a moment of silence after pledges?

Peaceful reflection on the pledge that we're giving? A moment for silent comtemplation of ones beliefs? A pause for students who wish to pray to whatever god they believe in?

A pause for silence in public schools is an absolutly wonderful idea. Kids can get shuffled to and from so fast and without ever taking a moment to truely be silent and be able to conteplate the day that lies ahead of them.

Sounds great. Wish we'd had it while I was in school!

Here in Columbia SC we have a moment of silence before we say the pledge, but I think its only required for elementary and middle schools because we never even said the pledge here from 9-11th grade.

I don't vivid remember having a "moment of silence" in the morning, after the Pledge when I was in high school (from 1992 to 1996), but I believe we did.

I really can't remember if there was a "moment of silence" when I was in elementary and middle school.

There was only a moment of silence during out 9/11 rememberence assemblies. We said the pledge a couple days after 9/11 in middle school, but we dont say it in HS.

I remember saying the pledge all the way through school, even high school. Had the same high school homeroom teacher til the end and the pledge was said over the public address system. Of course, that was in KY, not here in TX. I'll reserve the rest of my comments on the KY educational system.
