Georges? How can we forget!! It was our first hurricane season in Florida. We had just moved here from Arizona. My mom had just passed away. I was on my way home from Germany. We'd been watching the progress of the storm across the Atlantic. We were sitting in the Atlanta airport, our flight home to FWB had been delayed AGAIN. (Imagine ASA doing that...) We finally board, get buckled up, taxi out and the pilot says: Well folks, we've got a hurricane headed our way, but I think we can beat it.
Heck, no way to get out. We just hunkered down and hoped for the best. Start the descent about Crestview and you could see the tornadoes. So the pilot says that we arent landing at FWB. (Duh) Let's try for Pensacola. As we get there and turn for approach, the landing strip lights go out. The airport just closed. SO now where?? Dothan Alabama. Where we rented a car (at a RIDICULOUS rate) and drove home through driving rain, etc. I swear we were the only civilian vehicle headed in that direction. I think I started to hallucinate after having been up for two days now.
Driving along hwy 20 between Freeport and Niceville, the water was blowing up over the road. Freaky. We finally got home and settled in only to experience 32 inches of rain during the next 3 days. At least I didnt feel like doing anything but sleeping anyway. NO FUN at all. Lost more than a few trees. Our front and back yard and the golf course behind us was flooded.
