Tropical Systems/Media+the ill-informed

#1 Postby asd123 » Sun Oct 25, 2015 11:21 pm

Quite often when the news talks about an invest, they make it sound like an organized tropical disturbance. Some clarify, while others don't. Low information people pick up on that and say there is a storm a' comin'. In fact, once there was an invest forecasted to come through Florida, and someone told me there was a tropical storm coming. In my mind, I was shaking my head; I wish people were more informed.

This scenario is more directed towards ill-informed people and not the media. A hurricane is forecasted to be near Florida at day 5 (7 days away) and trajected toward Florida. People already start saying, "oh there's a hurricane coming." The next day, forecast path starts trending away. The well-informed person in my opinion would not hype this and keep an eye on the track. By end of day 4 days before get supplies (if good consensus)or day 3 , by end of day3 (if good consensus) or beginning of day 2 board up.

Not to mention that they typically focus on the 'Muricanes more than systems impacting other areas (unless if it's unusually intense, like Patricia).

Please note: Never take any statements I make about forecasts at face value, as I am nowhere near professional at that.

I blame the media more than anything, they like to hype things up for ratings, the station's meteorologist might explain it better as you said but the reporters/newscasters are the ones blowing it out of proportion, you have to realize that most of the people are not wx geeks like us.
