Taipei the most financially exposed city in the world to disasters, due to the wealth of the city and its exposure to disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, floods, and volcanoes. The top risk factor: typhoons, which can potentially put $81 billion in assets at risk in the city. Taiwan has already been hit by one major typhoon this year--Typhoon Soudelor, which hit Taiwan as a Category 3 storm with 120 mph winds on August 8, killing 8 people and doing over $30 million in damage.

Re: WPAC: DUJUAN - Typhoon
If i were JTWC, I would upgrade this to a Cat 5 but with no dvorak showing numbers that high, I see them conservatively upping to only 130-135 knots before it makes landfall...

Well I think some of the Cat 5's could have been stronger than 140.
This looks like the typical Atlantic Category 5.

Agreed. Put this side by side with Isabel (03?) and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

JTWC sticks with 125 knots . I'd say 140-145 knots now.

Jesus what a scary storm. Soudelor had a hit here, Goni came close, and now Dujuan. Taiwan's had a busy season.

I'd probably go 130 kt right now, down from 135-140 kt earlier. Even with a large eye, there was about 24 hours (with a couple of short breaks) where a warm medium grey eye was embedded within the white ring on the BD curve. Eyewall replacement looks like it has now begun, putting Dujuan past peak, and cloud tops are warming some in response. Dujuan is still very strong though, and a 104 kt wind gust has already been observed in the southern Ryukyus just outside the outer eyewall. Impressive.

Peak wind gust I found was at Hateruma with gust recorded to 57.5 m/s (112 kt) from the E at 1155 JST (0255 UTC). See http://www.jma.go.jp/en/amedas_h/today-94081.html?areaCode=000&groupCode=65 for reference, or pick from the map at http://www.jma.go.jp/en/amedas_h/map65.html?areaCode=219. Other peak gusts were 54.5 m/s (106 kt) at Shitaabaru (Hateruma airport), 44.9 m/s (87 kt) at Iriomotejima, and 43.4 m/s (84 kt) at Ishigakijima.
