Right because major hurricanes late in the season are boring unless it strikes land...

But the next time we get a real, serious threat to the U.S. - in particular the northern Gulf Coast or Florida, be assured this board will be jumping. Another thing I think is that people tend to just write-off the Atlantic season when they hear "el Nino." I don't care how strong the el Nino may be this year, it is certainly no guarantee from not getting hit by a hurricane. We should all be prepared because its when you turn your back that a surprise may hit you. In about two weeks from now, the Atlantic season generally sees an uptick in activity which increases as we head deeper into August. Lets see what this season has in store.

Well, I PRAY it stays boring for as long as I live down here. It's 37,000 deductible before I see ANYTHING on insurance with the named storm exclusion. If you have to pay for the damage these things cause, they're not so cool.

Season Cancel!!! :grrr:

El Nino or not, July isn't usually boiling with tropical action. We're beginning to close in on Cape Verde season, in perhaps another 4 weeks. As I recall, Andrew was a CV system, striking Homestead in late August.

Stretching it a bit, the Atlantic was only on its third named storm in August 1969, and that El Nino-influenced tropical season produced Camille.

Things have basically stayed the same since 2005, other than Ike and Sandy there hasn't been much since to talk about, or drive traffic. It's a long slow period, but many of the old guard is still around from then. Another big event or two and it will light up again. The Atlantic Basin and a large scale US hit is what drives participation (for better or worse).

I've lurked for some time, even weaker systems would have quite a few posts. I think after 2013, a lot of people lost patience, convinced themselves that every year would be the same, and then ignore or downplay things that do form even if they are stronger, just because they aren't hitting land as a Cat 5. It probably cleared a lot of people who only casually watched to kill time, and of course the people who would otherwise be posting a lot if they are being threatened by something, may not be here if nothing is threatening. But I think several people may simply be too impatient to make it through a few slow seasons given that 2005 probably got a lot interested in the first place, and may have been expecting it to be permanently active every year.

I don't think I could handle a lot of seasons like 2005.

Makes me wonder what this forum was like during 2006 when the season ended up being quiet despite active predictions like 2013.

It's the same every slow season, times haven't really changed in my opinion. This forum (Talking Tropics) goes all the way back to the beginning so you can read the threads and see the discussion. :)

I enjoyed Is Climatology losing credibility?

Please do NOT post in any old threads, and please keep this discussion light, there's no need to get upset over this. Thanks.

To be honest, even the most active seasons have a 'season cancel' thread if you don't have something forming every few days. I remember 2010 despite Alex in June, that because there was only one weak storm in July and nothing in the first half of August, people were saying it would be far less active than forecast. I think some people just don't have the patience for weather watching.

I was watching the live webcams in Bermuda during Gonzalo's closest approach. I think I took a nap in the middle of it.

That is true and notice it a lot in the ATL and understand because I feel the same way about the EPAC and to a lesser extend the ATL.

But you go to admit, times have for now changed. There has been very little activity on Storm2kk in general, and even the global model thread is quiet. The season cancel posts have always been there, but it's just that there is no interest in the Atlantic season.
