As of 8 pm, we have 38 blustery degrees at the Portastorm Weather Center in scenic southwest Travis County. Champ the Charger, the official PWC chase mobile, is gassed up and ready for action. Video cameras ready. All we need now is frozen precipitation.

Guidance earlier today suggested Austin would be around 35 at midnight. I suspect temps are running several degrees colder than progged by guidance given what I'm seeing around town at the moment. That obviously could have large implications with precip if we end up at or below freezing earlier than thought.

Radar is pretty wicked looking from Wichita Falls back into old Mexico. All training to the NE. Could be some epic sleet accumulations overnight.

You might want to consider yourself lucky right now, Dhweather! It's nothing pretty. Sleet and a freezing rain mix here. The trees do not sound comforting.

Transition in Abilene now to big blowing snow flakes. Quickly covering the cars and the ground. NWS still only saying Mist and Fog. Hmmm

I don't know if this will be a trend or not but it seems the HRRR is trending drier and drier for Austin after midnight. Should it verify we wouldn't get much freezing rain or sleet at all. Things that make me go "hmmm..."

Seems hard to believe the way the radar looks to the west and southwest but I guess you never know...

HRRR dries things out extremely quick

Well, never let it be said that Portastorm only focused on computer models which promised him something.

I hope the HRRR is wrong but at this point it's real time ... radar and surface obs.

Looks like the models are not handling what is going on presently well at all. RGEM still holds solid on precip well after midnight. SREF still holds solid with the event as well.

I don't mind missing freezing rain - but sleet is ok.

There is a lot of convection out west moving this way.

That low has a look of still digging a bit, and its moving kinda slow. The water vapor loop is amazing!
