It was supposed to be the storm of the century, a blizzard like no other that would dump two feet of snow on New York City and shut the Big Apple down for days.
Instead, New Yorkers awoke Tuesday to several inches of snow on the ground. Roads were mostly clear and the only headache was the fact the city had shut down the subways over fears of the impending snowstorm.
So what happened? How could the weatherman have gotten it so wrong?

Re: blizzard observations
That's like asking how a hurricane forecast that's 50 miles off 2-3 days before landfall can be so wrong. The precise track of the low in this case determined where the heavier snow fell. The low developed a little farther east, keeping NYC out of the heavier snow but not eastern Long Island north through Boston and coastal Maine. Preparing for the potential for a big snow event in NYC wasn't wrong. It would be like not preparing for a hurricane hit if the forecast is for the center to hit 50 miles away several days before landfall. You still have to prepare due to the uncertainty in the forecast. I don't think that the uncertainty in the forecast was explained well, but you can't fault NYC for preparing for the possibility of a big storm. They should be glad it missed them just to the east.

Well Wxman, Chad Myers the MET from CNN has been bragging all day that the GFS with its million dollar improvements was the only model that predicted lower snowfall for NYC. He went as far to say he'll follow that model exclusively in the future. BTW, he also bragged he was one of the few METs that predicted lower snowfall for NYC, lol.
