Report: Suspect in Paris attack turns himself in

(CNN)—French police say two suspects in Wednesday's terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo magazine are still on the loose after escaping onto the streets of Paris.

In a statement on their website, French national police ask for information on the whereabouts of suspects Cherif Kouachi and Said Kouachi, warning that both could be armed and dangerous.

Police released photos of the two men, who Paris Deputy Mayor Patrick Klugman told CNN are brothers in their 30s.
Citing sources, the Agence France Presse news agency reported that an 18-year-old suspect in the attack had surrendered to police. CNN has not independently confirmed whether the suspect has surrendered.

Police fanned out across France in search of the the suspects, who were masked and dressed in black when they burst into the satirical magazine's office Wednesday, killing 12 people.

A tactical unit was deployed in an operation about a 144 kilometers (about 90 miles) from Paris in Reims, France, following the attack, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported. Authorities haven't revealed details about the target of the operation, but speculation surged in French media that investigators could be closing in on the suspects.

French authorities vowed to step up security and apprehend those responsible.

"Everything will be done to arrest (the attackers)," French President Francois Hollande said in a speech Wednesday night. "... We also have to protect all public places. Security forces will be deployed everywhere there can be the beginning" of a threat.

It's too soon to say whether the suspects were operating alone, CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank said.

Some experts warned that how well the gunmen wielded their weapons, hid their identities and apparently planned their escape showed a marked difference from previous "lone wolf" attacks -- and could be a game changer.

• No shots have been fired during the police operation in Reims, said Charles Henry Boudet, a journalist with CNN affiliate France 3. Police entered a building and then left about 15 minutes later. Then a forensics team went upstairs, Boudet said.

• During Wednesday's attack in Paris, the gunmen asked for specific people by name before killing them, according to a doctor who helped wounded patients and spoke with survivors of the attack. Dr. Gerald Kierzek said the gunmen divided the men from the women before opening fire. The shooting was not a random spray of bullets, he said, but more of a precision execution.

• In the United States, investigators have been given the suspects' names and are running them through databases, according to Rep. Mike McCaul of Texas, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

• Around France and the rest of Europe, thousands turned out for rallies Wednesday evening, expressing solidarity with France and Charlie Hebdo and defiance to those behind the bloodshed.

Paris (CNN)—Even as a nationwide hunt continues for two men who attacked French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, another tense confrontation unfolded for police in the southern suburbs of Paris on Thursday morning.

A police officer was shot there and she died. And about 20 heavily armed police have an apartment building surrounded, pushing crowds back from the area.

Witnesses said the gunman, dressed all in black like the Charlie Hebdo attackers and apparently wearing a bulletproof vest, got out of a car as police officers were dealing with a traffic accident and fired at two of them. The suspect hasn't been captured.

It is unclear whether Thursday's shooting in the Montrouge suburb is related to the attack on Wednesday.

Police have arrested several people in connection with the shooting at the offices of France's Charlie Hebdo magazine in central Paris, in which 12 people were killed and 11 wounded.

But the prime suspects in Wednesday's brazen attack, Cherif Kouachi, 32, and Said Kouachi, 34, remain on the run.

Police fanned out across France on Thursday looking for the pair. A third suspect turned himself in.

"They are still free, they are heavily armed, so we can be afraid of further violence," French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in an interview with French broadcaster RTL.

Condolences to the victims and their families. These acts of violence just really upset me.

Honestly I don't really understand this Islam being a religion of peace thing. There are a lot of good Muslims out there, but these seem to be widespread in Muslim countries: oppression of women, beheadings, stone ings, honor killings, suicide bombings , and violence against those who insult their religion.

People can satirize Christianity and Judaism, and when someone makes fun of Islam they have to worry about getting killed. When someone makes fun of Islam the entire Middle East is in uproar; crowds rally and chant for the death of the cartoonists. When someone makes fun of other religions, then there is no violence seen as when Islam is insulted.

There is really something wrong here!
