Reminds me of a less intense Wilma with the tiny eye trying to turn into a donut. It keeps going through too many ERC's to clear out though. It's like it's being overly cautious or something.

There are several stations on the island, but the main airport is definitely the most reliable - the rest are elevated locations and likely not representative of the true intensity. They showed extreme readings during Fabian (i.e. gusts to Cat 5 levels).

from royal Gazette FB page:

#Bermuda #Gonzalo NEWS UPDATE 2.07 pm
The Bermuda Weather Service has warned that tropical storm force winds currently buffeting the Island will become destructive storm to hurricane force this afternoon. The most extreme and dangerous winds are expected this evening. Seas continue to build 35-40 feet with dangerous waves, swell and surge in advance of a 5PM high tide. Hurricane Gonzalo is now categorised as a Category 3 storm with maximum winds of 126 miles per hour but much stronger gusts, is scheduled to pass directly over the Island at 8 p.m.

Does anyone know to what extent the reefs in Bermuda reduce the impact of the waves / surge?

Latest NHC advisory:

A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED
WITHIN THE WARNING AREA...IN THIS CASE WITHIN THE NEXT 12 TO 18
HOURS. PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY SHOULD HAVE BEEN
COMPLETED.

In other words, time's up. Now all they can do is hunker down.

West side looks weaker, but this could be due to the wind reduction from the forward speed.

It just occurred to me that because of the large eye and this island is so tiny they could wind up with quite a long calm. Maybe even more than an hour. Will be another interesting feature to watch.
