Ice Storm in progress over SE TX.

Public reports indicate ice accumulations of .25 to .40 of an inch from Columbus to Katy to Jersey Village to Humble and northward to Hempstead and Conroe. Tree limbs are starting to break and fall under the heavy weight of the ice and are knocking out power. Power outages have increased to 37,000 and continue to increase.

Radar indicates additional freezing rain extends along I-10 from San Antonio to near Columbus and this will push into the areas already very hard hit with accumulations overnight. Additional ice accumulations of .05 to .15 of an inch will be possible with storm totals possibly exceeding .50 of an inch over northern Harris, Waller, Austin, northern Fort Bend, and Montgomery Counties.

Surface temperatures remain very near 32 north of US 59 which is just warm enough to keep most bridges over the Houston metro area from freezing. West of the Brazos River and north of HWY 105 bridges are ice covered and driving is extremely hazardous.

Temperature about 34F at my house in SW Houston. Drove the south loop to I-45 south to work and didn't see any evidence of sub-freezing temps and ice. Bridges & overpasses on the south loop are just wet. With such nice March weather I almost rode my bike to work - but I couldn't figure out how to carry my big rolling computer bag an iPad bag with me.

As it turned out, the "big" winter storm for Austin never materialized. Ground temps ended up being a bit too warm and the moisture plume to our southeast took away some of the HRRR-promised moisture. Some bridges/overpasses in far north Austin are icy and exposed metal objects outside are iced over but that's about it.

Looks like this was Houston's storm after all.

I know this the Texas thread but just have to come over and say this is amazing. 4th winter storm this winter for my parts. Sitting at 30-31 with sleet and freezing rain moving in. Not under any advisory at the moment though, but they are all around me. Elevated portions of the Interstates being shut down as well the Mississippi river bridges in baton rouge. Further west headed to Lafayette and lake Charles all the major highways and interstate is already closed.

I'm not far from Cyclone Mike, and I just went out to fill my bird feeders. The feeder roofs are glazed with ice, and small icicles are forming on one feeder roof. So far, I'm just getting a light rain, but it is 29 degrees at my house so the rain is freezing. This is south Louisiana in MARCH!!!

Yeah, I agree. Drove to work from Humble. It was wet, but the folks were going over the speed limit. To your last comment, he ha he. You know Porta, we are going to pay for this from him during the Summer. I hope you know that.

No payment necessary this summer. I do believe an El Nino like summer with lack of 100s is in the works. It can be seen very clearly the subtropical jet/pineapple express has awakened, with potentials of tropical cyclones in the wpac. The atmosphere is shifting to that regime. If you look in the ENSO thread, what is occurring right now over the Pacific resembles the incoming of the 1997 Nino.

Has wxman57 defeated an El Nino? Because if one developed in early summer I doubt he could do much to make the summer anywhere near 2011.

It is unlikely there will be a hot (above to way above normal) summer. Pretty good correlation that those occur when a La Nina has developed during the summer or is transitioning to one from another La Nina (2011 was a strong Nina dissipating to another weak-moderate Nina). On occasion you will see a neutral summer be well above normal. Don't believe there has ever been an above normal overall for a Nino summer.

Received .58 of rain at 32.2F here. Yes thats right, 32.2F. Never had any signs of ice here which is disappointing but at the same time thankful because it would have caused a complete mess. The rain really picked up in the night at one point but no ice at all here.

Got down to 21 overnight in Denison after a high of 30 yesterday.

We've been at or below freezing for 54 consecutive hours.

Ntxw, where does DFW sit for days with a freeze recorded?

Today's freeze is 54th this surpasses 1911-1912's 53 and is alone in 6th place. 1898-1899 is next at 56 in 5th place. We are 8 freezes away to tie the all time record of 62.

Wow, another winter storm for SE TX. It has been an amazing winter season for you all down there and I have had a pretty good time following this thread this winter. Makes me feel very fortunate being here in my corner of the country in how we have mostly escaped the storms, although we had light sleet here on the tail end of the winter storm that hit GA and the Carolinas in late January.

You guys are a very good and astute group of weather junkies on this thread, like yours truly. It is fun following the goings on over in Texas, and I look forward to more banter in less than three months when the hurricane season gets underway!
