Last Night's 0zECMWF Ensemble Control Run forecast 1/2'' to 1 inch of Snow for my area!
The GFS and NAM continue to be drier for the same period.

Re: Texas Winter 2013-2014
Busy day for me as I'm about to leave for the Welcome to Austin, Coach Strong! parade on South Congress.
OK, more seriously, some general observations include noting that the GFS operational runs are showing a pattern days 8-15 that look a bit colder and a bit stormier for the Southern Plains. The 12z Euro op run should raise an eyebrow or two as the potent upper-level (cold core) low looks to make a trek across the state and those 850mb temps look might cold, folks! I'm not sold it'll be a rain event only for Texas next weekend. That merits close watch in the days ahead.

12Z GFS meteogram for Houston still has lows of only 27F/26F for Mon/Tue. MOS temps are a good bit colder (23F/21F). My wife just went to Home Depot for some bird seed and says that the store is full of people buying supplies to keep outdoor pipes/faucets from freezing. I did that a month ago and my pipes are happy and relatively warm. My outside pipes, that is. My internal pipes are quite cold and wishing it was July.

Nearly all deterministic and ensemble models depict an even colder air mass in NW Canada. It is not yet dislodged on their runs but after a couple of storms height rises occur over Alaska and the pole is showing -AO. Jan 15th week needs to be watched for another potential Arctic blast into the CONUS.

Re: Texas Winter 2013-2014
Call me a snowman, but I see low pressure on the coastline of Mexico, moisture a-plenty ready to overrun our cold air. Could there be a hidden disturbance lurking for some winter fun for South Central Texas the next two days??? (spellcheck kills the word "Wishcaster" (w-i-s-h-c-a-s-t-e-r) everytime I use it!)

Re: Texas Winter 2013-2014
12Z Euro doesn't indicate any significant Arctic outbreaks through the 15th. It does have a deepening upper low north of Alaska and a 1045+ mb high well poleward of Alaska on the 15th. Looking forward to a return of 60s and 70s later this week...

The same model run that showed not much cold air for this week 10 days ago?

On the 28th, clearly it is not going to be 70 in Dallas tomorrow

wxman57 wrote:European run doesn't indicate much for TX the next 10 days. Slow warming trend the first week of January - up to near 70 degrees in Dallas by the 6th.
Euro this year has performed poorly in Alaska and the gulf Alaska, persistently trying to bring +EPO that eventually turns neutral and then negative

Re: Texas Winter 2013-2014
It will be interesting to see if DFW can bust the forecast and go lower. Lows this year have been off by 2-5 degrees often in cold air masses that were shown by models and NWS (we busted several to get to 24 freezes by 31st that were not forecast). RAP gets much of the areas deep into the teens, if the winds can die down would not be surprised if a few spots dipped below 10.
Text output (mavs-mos) says 12-14 for the area

Forecast low for Texarkana tonight is 12. The high tomorrow is expected to be 25, and the low tomorrow night is expected to be 13. That is pretty cold if you ask me, considering there is no snow cover.

The same Euro that predicted a low of 25 at IAH around the 3rd-4th 10 days ago. It was a tad off in the days, but got the outbreak right.
