I was tell Porta this morning it's been a long time since we have seen a trowal across SE Texas.

What causes a 'trowal'? Was 2004 and the very deep band of snow a 'trowal'?

Is the moisture in SETX going to come over to SELA? Just curious if we may have some of the same sleet/flurry reports tonight that you guys are getting now. May be a good combination for us with the temps dropping after sunset, if the timing works out. Just not sure if that Low is going to skirt the coast or if it is moving NE up through Texas, which would probably means the precip misses us to the North.

Falling where? Bellville?

Yes sir Portastorm. It quit just as fast as it started. Very small ice pellets and a few flurries. It has since rained and now a mist. At least my 6 year old got to see a few flurries. I have a brother-in-law working up around Huntsville and he just called and said it was snowing at a pretty good rate.

Snow north of Houston, some sleet closer to the coast:

The atmosphere above parts of Houston is cold enough that some of today’s precipitation is reaching the ground as snow, or sleet, rather than rainfall.

Snow has been reported in Huntsville, sleet and ice pellets have been seen in The Woodlands and sleet has been spotted in the Copperfield area, northwest of Houston.

Well I got to see some sleet and snow today along with this rain we've all had. I have heard on the news that downtown Houston also received some snowflakes. Any information on that?

Yeah buddy and we didn't get doodlie-squat here in Austin but a cold, hard rain. So be happy over there!

Can someone share the ensemble? If not, can you elaborate? 10 days is not THAT far out. If it sticks with the scenario for a few more days then it will be a good bet it is on to something.

Ask and ye shall receive ... and what this shows, basically, is a dump of Arctic air into the lower 48 midsection:

Nothing but the most miserable weather on Earth in SW Houston (40-42 and light rain). I'd take 120 degrees over this any day. Warm spring weather is approaching fast, only about 4 months to go...

Jeff Jameson(CBS Dallas) without getting too far ahead of himself, just mentioned an arctic blast at the end of next week. Quick mention but confident. Until then it will be a slow warm up reaching the seventies by next week.

Darn, I can't even call this the Winter of Wxman57's Discontent ... because we're still in Autumn! :P

I almost feel sorry for you, ol' friend. Almost. Stay warm down there. Looks like more is coming later next week.

Yep, pretty insane run on the Euro Ensemble Control today......showing an upper level low pressure system crossing the north central plains of almost 4 1/2 standard deviations from normal a week from now. It's still a week out but all models have been very consistent with this Arctic Outbreak, now they will start to fine tune where the core of the cold will end up. Also of note, the GFS is notoriously bad with these type airmasses, particularly at the lower levels, so I wouldn't pay too much attention to that model's surface depiction quite yet

500 mb chart:

Image

850 mb temps of some 40+ degrees F below normal over the central plains next Thursday

Will that cold cold make it to the coast in that run?
