NHC and shutdown

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Tue Oct 01, 2013 10:35 am

Are there any impacts on hurricane forecasting with the government shutdown? Are Hurricane Hunters flights still running if necessary?

As far as I know most of the operational parts of the National Weather Service have been deemed essential and will continue.

In fact, they will fly missions to 97L starting on Wednesday so that area will not be affected.

If the airports are operating, I would think NWS would have to.

From the NHC website.

Due to the Federal Government shutdown, NOAA.gov and most associated web sites are unavailable. However, because the information this site provides is necessary to protect life and property, it will be updated and maintained during the Federal Government shutdown.

The United States. The only country without a government at the moment. (So enjoy it while it lasts).

Good, I was worried we would have to rely on satellites and surface obs due to the shutdown.

Here is what I got when I typed in "nws.noaa.gov":
http://governmentshutdown.noaa.gov

Interesting that "weather.gov" is fine, but nws.noaa.gov is shut down (despite being the SAME thing!!!)
