your poll is meant to be funny, right?
although I do know that some people who have never expeirenced a hurricane, might say they want to experience a hurricane, I can't imagine anyone wanting to experience a CAT 4
and if they say they do, they have no idea what they are talking about

It seems to me that some people get excited about hurricanes just like the storm chasers that follow tornadoes in the Mid-west. I'm sure this poll will show that some people experience a thrill in facing and surviving danger - even, and maybe especially, the most dangerous kinds.

I'm one of those wierd one- right in the middle. I certainly don't want a face full of Isabel (My husband is threatening to move to Utah for a week if she barrells though) but it would be kinda cool to feel the winds. Not that I want her to hit anyone else. For that matter- just give me a nasty thunderstorm and I'll probably pass on the "I survived Isabel" shirts.

As a survivor of Bertha, Fran, Bonnie, and Floyd (just to name a few), I absolutely, positively, without a doubt do not want Isabelle to hit the coast of NC. Yes, there is a certain amount of thrill when a hurricane is headed in your direction, but that thrill is overcome by the massive destruction that can be caused, especially by one as powerful as Isabelle.

I don't think anyone would want a Category 4 to strike their area we are talking about a storm that would:
Produce a storm surge of 13-18 feet above normal
More extensive curtainwall failures with some complete roof structure failures on small residences. Shrubs, trees, and all signs are blown down. Complete destruction of mobile homes. Extensive damage to doors and windows. Low-lying escape routes may be cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Major damage to lower floors of structures near the shore. Terrain lower than 10 ft above sea level may be flooded requiring massive evacuation of residential areas as far inland as 6 miles (10 km).
Hurricane Luis of 1995 was a Category Four hurricane while moving over the Leeward Islands.

That's about perfect actully- so long as I can have a deep sunk bunker with glass thick enough to let me watch it as it blows... without being in any danger

Are your nuts?
I'll be the first to admit that I am here because I enjoy the "idea" of the power of a hurricane. Do I ever want to experience another one? NO WAY! Surviving a storm itself is one thing, if you DO survive to get one of those t-shirts. Sure, the winds are exciting-you wonder when the roof, doors or windows will blow-that's some excitement for you! Will you be blown away with the structure or will a flying piece of debris gettcha. If the water rises in your structure you wonder how high it might go before you and everything else starts floating.
Then comes the rest-the aftermath of a CAT 4 can not really be described, it must be experience for full appreciation. I went through Luis on St. Maarten and ended up in Miami (not by choice) after Andrew. No electricity, water, sewer, trash removal, decay of wildlife and household pets-(use your nose in an imaginative way) This goes on for weeks on end and don't forget FL and the Caribbean are HOT, MUGGY and BUGGY in September. Then you have the loss of your home, possessions and irreplaceable heirlooms. Yup, sure sounds like a picnic to me!
Sorry for the sarcasm but hurricanes are only pretty from a distance. Definitely not worth the t-shirt.

GO FLORIDA GATORS
I'll GLADLY take a T-Shirt.....
Yeah, I'm crazy about weather and 'Canes, but I ain't THAT fricken crazy!!! I wouldn't mind a strong tropical storm or weak CAT1 hitting me, those are survivable, but this ISABEL monster storm?
No T-Shirt for you, 'cuz you'd be DEAD! As a doornail.
You would have to be totally outa your mind to actually WANT to be in a CAT5 on the coast. We're talking 20 foot surge, 30-foot battering waves on top of the surge, and 155 mph winds to boot. You're gonna end up floating if you're not already dead, and the winds are gonna be knocking things into you, waves smashing you under the water, and lots of other horrifying stuff not even described here, for hours on end.
Nah, Izzy can be a Fish or hit an unpopulated region far from me.

weatherluvr - I absolutely love your idea! Getting to see the power of a strong hurricane without having to be affected, and knowing that no people would be injured or killed, would be pretty cool. I too would not ever want to experience anything more than a minimal Cat 1 hurricane. And even THAT would make me nervous.
